Too often, as fans, we don't think about the business side of drafting NFL players. The salary cap has revolutionized the league and greatly impacts every decision made, especially expensive choices, like the #2 pick in the draft.

The real dilemna I think Saban is facing now is matching salary cap guidlines with players available. The top of the food chain in Salary Cap World is normally reserved for only LT's, QB's, pass rushing DE's, and shut-down CB's. In this draft, only 2 names apparently qualify for that list...Alex Smith and Aaron Rogers. There don't appear to be any LT's, DE's and CB's worthy of the #2 pick. Probably, at least one of these guys will be drafted by San Francisco, which leaves potentially one name. Best guess...Alex Smith.

That makes it a tough call for Saban. Either he takes Alex Smith, which will rock AJ's world and make Smith our franchise QB, or he takes another player that typically doesn't fall in line with cap theory. Yes, there are RB's and WR's that make #2 pick type cap money, but they are the Randy Moss's and Edge James's of the world, meaning Edwards or Brown, for instance, would have to be potential pro bowlers to stay within cap philosophy, something NFL people like Saban talk a lot about.

We fans love to play fantasy football and hope our team goes after the players we love, but the business side of the NFL, especially the cap, is just as important to the decision makers.

Bottom line, if Saban thinks Alex Smith is a franchise QB, then he makes the most cap sense. If not, trading down is the hopeful option. Otherwise, we may be forced to take a good player that could help us, but may cause cap problems for us down the road.

actually the top 10 DEs make about the same as the top 10 RBs... and also DTs are one of the lower level wth the top 10 salaries, yet they are very often top 5/10 picks the past few years...

also by drafting an alex smith, your gonna be paying him to sit for 2-3 years... when if you get a rB you're at least paying him and hes performing right away... i think business logic in that sense says take that RB, especially when tehre are so many questions on if that QB is in fact a franchise QB

Great post, I argee with you strongly on a lot of the stuff. I'm not going to worry about it thought because I trust Saban to make the right moves.

Agreed a great post.
Top 5 picks are reserved franchise hall-of-fame players: Troy A., Tony Boseilli(sp), etc.

Neither the two QB nor the three RB are graded that high. Ugh.

IMO, it's either trade down or take BPA - mainly Ronnie Brown.

That's a good point that many don't want to accept. In this age of the salary cap and big FA contracts, you want to get every bit of playing time that you can out of your draft picks before they reach FA status because that's when they have their most value.

Another way to look at it is, if you G, DT, or S, when they reach FA status and are worth keeping, they'll be cheaper to re-sign than any other position. Too bad there aren't any of those positions worth taking at number two.

Boselli will not be in the HOF.

but even still with the business side of drafting, I would not let money dictate us drafting the BPA... I personally think Smith will be a flop in the NFL, and I read an article in a NY newspaper saying his workout and the response to it was greatly exaggerated... With that being said, should we draft Smith, over the best 2 prospects in the draft, Brown or Edwards, because the money we must dish out at the 2 spot is a better value for the QB position?NO.... say not to that fake NFL prospect, the next Fun and Gun QB: Alex Smith

You're right. He didn't play long enough.

IMO he ought be.

It really sucks for him. He was just that good. He was like Jordan Gross in in his mobility, Ogden in his strength, and Roaf in his tenacity.

The salary cap has really changed NFL drafting. You could be a player with the potenial of a HOF center, let's say Dwight Stevenson, or a perennial pro bowl fullback, but I seriously doubt that any NFL team would spend a #2 pick on you. That's how it is now-a-days. That pick is usually reserved for the big 4, LT, DE, QB, or CB. I think even CB, because of the new rules is falling down. The shut-down corner will be a thing of the past due to the interference and holding calls.
