HOUSTON -- In honor of Norv Turner getting hired by the Raiders today, I'm running an excerpt from a Vegas column that appeared on my old website (posted on May 7, 2001). In the column, I'm describing a Sunday breakfast at Mandalay Bay with three of my buddies -- including our friend Hopper, who played blackjack until the wee hours with Turner, who had been recently fired in Washington. It's one of my favorite stories ... and it's absolutely, 100-percent true.

EDIT: Once again, please do not post more than a few sentences.

That's probably the dumbest anology I've ever heard. Just because someone isn't masterful at playing cards doesn't mean that they're not masterful in other areas of their lives. I have very successful friends with whom I play poker on occasion and some of them simply suck. Is it because they have something inherently wrong with them that they can't play the game at a higher level? No. It's because they don't choose to put their time and effort into studying the game because, for the most part, it's not worth their time.

In this instance, I'd have to say the same applies.

I think it makes some sense. His nature MAY be that once he gets ahead he gets so conservative he ends up giving up the advantage. Sounds like our offense conseravtive, boring and predictable.

I understood the anology of getting conservative once your ahead, but I still believe it has about as much validity as "Iraqi weapons of mass destruction" at this point in time.

What the genius that told the story failed to realize is that Norv didn't particularly like him and was intentionally trying to screw his day.

:goof:

How can he be bad at playing cards if he was up. You said he was counting his chips.

I dont think that was the point. The point is..............when you're trying to win u play the game the way its supposed to be played.............when you're trying not to lose u screw everbody!
