In one of my sociology classes today, the professor was lecturing on social institutions. He said football could be considered an American institution, and the Dolphins themselves as definitely a local institution. It got me thinking, the Dolphins really are a symbol of Miami. A relatively young franchise compared to the original cities, sort of like how Miami is a relatively young city compared to Chicago and New York. Both the Dolphins and Miami started off slow then had a remarkable period of rapid growth, slowly tapering off in recent years. I can imagine other teams in Miami relocating. Marlins? Panthers? Talks happen all the time. Even the Heat could one day go somewhere. But the Dolphins? It just seems like it'd be the end of the world before that. I think it speaks volumes that many UK fans became Dolphins fans because of their vacations to Miami. The Dolphins truly are the most important symbol to the city of Miami, not a landmark or skyscraper, or even person (Technically, EVERYONE in Miami is a transplant), but the Dolphins.

Or its just late at night and I'm rambling due to sleep deprivation. But whatever

there are many other things that caracterize miami...

the dolphins are just a part of what a great entertainment this city provides... not just the dolphins, but football in general... it just seems to me like every year, there's something good going on in football in south beach... The dolphins, the canes, a college bowl, and 1 year out of 4 there's a superbowl... if you're a football fan, you'll always find a nice game every year in south beach

Yeah, people call New York a "baseball town", or Detroit a "hockeytown" and whatnot, but Miami, with all the high school talent, multiple established and growing college teams (Canes and the new FIU) and the Dolphins themselves, it is a football town no question
