Bill Belichick, this generation’s most successful NFL coach, was on a conference call with South Florida reporters earlier this year when he explained how he measures a defense’s success.
“The most important statistic is points,” Belichick said. “And the next most important statistic is turnovers.”
And with that, the man who won two Super Bowl rings coaching the New York Giants defense before he won five more coaching the New England Patriots, didn’t quite dismiss all the other defensive stats you hear tossed around — but he certainly put them in their place behind what he deems important.
So now I present to you what’s important about the Miami Dolphins’ defense.

I’d say it’s been pretty average. More blown assignments than scheme or anything else issues

So I wouldn’t expect much change with regards to how we play it

Extending Wake, Jones and Alonso didn't really add anything. They were already here last year. The top 3 picks went to defense but we lost RM before the season even started and we got Hayes who's on IR and Tank has missed the last two games. Some were moves that didn't worked out and some were injuries but at the end of the day we need another DE and at least one or two LB's before we can even think about being a good defense

Ozzy rules!!

We extended the wrong guys. We need a DE because Branch is meh. We need a LB because Kiko absolutely stinks. And it's harder now because those 2 contracts can't be cut.

They're Gase's guys they can't be the source of the problem and they can't be cut.

I don't think its that bad. Add McMillan and a DE we could be pretty good

This article is true, and that is rediculous. There is so much money on defense, and we are just bad. There are defenses with way less talent that are much better. I think the wide 9 is first to blame. It just doesn’t work. I’m not excited about Burke. He doesn’t seem to have any idea what the offense will do till the 2nd half. I hopefully change happens in the offseason. I know Burke will probably be here but he needs help and to change the scheme.

It’s mid pack stuff. They will bank on x and tank and raekwon and Phillips and Harris and godchaux continued development to help get it over the hump.

There’s plenty of young talent on that defense even if nothing stands out right now as truly top shelf at their position.

We are not coaches and I don't think any of us (could be wrong) has a pipe line into the locker room of this team, but the writer cannot believe or anyone on this site for one minute that this defense was supposedly fixed in the offseason. This team was filling holes with stop gap players from the beginning of the season with one and two year contracts, our LB unit is one of the worse in the league, our secondary is young, our Dline has a couple of overpriced players that should be jettisoned and we lack a ball hawking FS to prevent TEs from eating us alive, how the hell was this defense supposedly fixed in the offseason? All of us was hoping for the best with this defense including those that praised the moves (including me) Gase made in the offseason, this article is designed for fans as a talking point which has had the desired affect.

Stats are deceiving...we have a young set of corners that are starting to emerge and should only get better.

We need more improvement at linebacker and I believe this unit will grow into a good one.

Nothing to really be excited about. The big contracts are deflating because it tells you the type of minds we have running our organization. How do we ever expect to compete for a championship with guys assembling the roster think Branch, Alonso and Jones are building blocks to a great defense. I know I’ll be criticized for being down on Jones but for the life of me I have never seen what others on this board have seen. Every flash play is negated by several where he is out of position. If he was drafted by New England I’m certain he would of been replaced years ago. The dolphins just keep giving him new contracts.

Watching this defense at the 4-2 mark was a pleasant surprise. It gave me hope that Burke was growing into his position of Defensive Coordinator. The players were playing well and the Timmons distraction seemed Minimal if at all. But then came the 5 game losing streak, and those 2000 plus yards the defense gave up during the streak. Talk about wanting to run and hide someplace, I was embarrassed watching this team on National TV, getting smoked and embarrassed, laughed at and toyed with by other teams. It was disgusting to watch. The silver lining in that losing streak, was the admittance of all the blown assignments. I read somewhere in the Carolina game there were 20 blown assignments out of 60 or so plays. That’s one hell of, a lot, of mistakes. Burke admitted publically he could do better and the players had a players only meeting, which seemed to finally get everyone on the same page once again. But with that being said; the same issue has reared its head once again. That being the defenses inability to cover the middle of the field. Game after game TE’s and RB’ are running crossing routes, slants and others over the middle, wide open or a defender trailing the play, who’s in recovery mode due to lack of recognition or technique. Once the team figures out how to stop plays over the middle or finds players who can, things will either remain the same or perhaps get even worse. Until then we pray!!!

I thought the defense actually played quite well at points this season. Much better than last year, especially the run defense
