The Dolphins have signed LB Donald Butler.

This goes hand in hand with Earl Mitchell to IR. I don't know anything about him

.@MiamiDolphins have released LB James Burgess off the practice squad.

The Miami Dolphins wanted a thumper who can play meaningful snaps for them on defense from the linebacker spot. They also wanted to add a seventh linebacker. They've done both today.

The team has signed free agent linebacker Donald Butler.

Butler, one of the top linebackers who came out of the 2010 draft and was picked No. 79 overall by San Diego, signed with Miami after working out for the team today.

Butler was available after he was released by the Chargers in March 2016 after he played six seasons for that team. He was picked up by the Arizona Cardinals in July and released on the final cut to 53 on Sept. 3.

Butler, 6-1 and 242 pounds, has 238 career tackles, including seven career sacks. He has five forced fumbles and six career recovered fumbles.

Seems to have a nose for causing / recovering fumbles...

interesting seeing as San Diego runs a 3-4 I believe....he seems like he could spell Kiko & Jenkins tho in case they get hurt or want them to be fresh as possible.

I remember when he was coming out of college. I guess they took him over AJ Hawk. We need depth at LB for sure as all 3 of our LBs have been hurt at one time or another

Ozzy rules!!

He's been productive and has experience. It's something. I still like Hewitt and even Hull in some aspects. But even if a step slow, Butler has experience. You can only get some much from the bargain bin known as September cuts.

Athletic and rangy pretty average at best instincts but id rather play with him than mike hull..this might be about hewitts development though

Never really thought this guy fit the thumper poa stopper stuff...not at all

Would not play him over any of the base starters...gives us another nickel and sub option...that misi stuff cant last

I don't think he's very good?

He managed to earn himself a 50M contract in 2014.. Some familiar with the situation called it the biggest money grab in NFL history. The assumption being he gave up after getting paid, not the talent or production wasn't there.

Here is the article, calling what he did "fraud" http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/2016/mar/03/chargers-donald-butler-fraud/

Honestly? I'd rather take a chance on a guy with motivational concerns (see Mario Williams) than a guy who was supposed to be and never was. This guy was performing at a pretty high level in 2011 and 2012.. He declined only when they drafted Manti Teo and the assumption was that the LB core would be much improved. Instead, Butler ended up losing his job and not helping Teo at all, especially in his rookie year.

This guy was the consensus #1 rated free agent ILB for the 2014 season.. Is that potential gone and is he shot? who knows. But at least we get a chance at him without the risk of what happened in San Diego - he ultimately was cut for a 9M savings with a staggering 18M cap penalty! :bobdole: damn, no wonder they refer to him as "The Fraud".

Butler averaged 91 combined solo and assisted tackles through his first three NFL seasons (he sat out all of 2010) and that number slipped all the way to 56 over the last two years, per Pro-Football-Reference.
