The Dolphins need two to three good years out of Gus Frerotte. The new GM has made it clear that he intends to draft our future QB. It would be beneficial for any rookie QB that we bring in to be able to start behind a solid O line. Until the O line is is a solid unit with good depth, Gus is the Dolphins best option. It takes time for a rookie QB acclimate to the NFL. While our rookie QB learns the offense and practices With the team for a year Saban will have two drafts and two goes at free agency before the new guy has to start. Gus has a chance to finish his career of on a good note. Saban has made it clear that he intends to win now and he will give the team the opportunity to do that every Sunday. Even after Gus is not starting anymore he can stay on for a couple years as a mentor to the younger guys.

IMO, Gus will start again next year to let the rookie acclimate, then probably retire after the year and let the guy start as a 2nd year player in 2K7. Maybe they'll sign Gus to a 1 year minimum deal in 2007 to serve as a backup, but otherwise, I see 2006 being the last hurrah for Frerotte

We're in trouble this year with him, and you want him for another 2 or 3...if he was the backup, fine..but as a starter, we're in trouble with Gus...

What has he done that's so horrible? I mean, he's not going to single handedly win us any games, but he isn't going to throw it away either(Feeley).

I'm guessing you haven't been around long enough to read all of the posts by the biggest Gus hater ever. Its nothing but "He's terrible" or "we're in trouble with him"

this was one of the biggest Feeley supporters who just cant let it go

Lol, that's quite true. He's always posting threads about drafting and/or signing an FA to come in for Gus. I really am not disapointed in him. If anything, I think he's exceeded expectations.

a rookie qb sitting n watching isn't technically the best way to approach things. WHOEVER said it is? Manning said himself, he is soo thankful that he wasn't a backup but rather learned on the field his first year as did his brother. thats how you learn, on the field, first hand punishment. look at J.P. he sat last year and he SITLL sucks ***. this isn't technically the way to approach it. Oh yea, i personally think by the tiem our QB of the future is here, we will have a huge problem on defense as we did iwht marino. IT always happens, by the time u upgrade one side of the field, the other side goes down unless you are lucky and you get a brady out of the Behind while ur team already has a great D.

it all depends on the circumstances.....for example, Palmer didn't have a problem. If we had a top 5 pick again and got Leinart, you're damn right I'd want him out there, but if we get our guy in the second or third, it wouldn't hurt to let him catch up with the speed of the game. He could still take over and start the rest of the 2006 season if he was ready.

Carson Palmer turned out alright, he sat his first year. And I don't think that we'll have a problem on defense, Saban turned two mid-round picks into starters this year, imagine what he'll do with a few years and a few more offseasons to work with.

Be happy if Frerotte last's out this season....he's nothing more than a stop gap QB!

btw, how long do u guys think saban will be around? and our GM...ok pretty much this entire staff we just got?

Saban had an advantage in the draft last year because he was more familiar with a lot of the players. His advantage will last one more draft and then the playing field will be leveled.

You gotta like the man's style though.

But as long as he's our starter, we shouldn't have that mentality about him.

Frerotte is a stop gap, but who cares? Arn't most all QB's? Isn't every team looking to upgrade at every position? Of course we have a big need at QB next season, and will look to upgrade it. But if there is no QB worth it, Gus and Sage will have another year here. If there is someone that is worth the draft pick, or the money, Gus and Sage's shot will be over. Right now though, the only QB we have a chance drafting will be in the 15-25 pick range, so we miss Leinart. And the only QB on the market will be Rivers, and he will cost a #1. It will be a fun offseason again for the phins.

Saban is here for the long haul. He knows that when you have good assistant coaches that stand out you loose them to bigger money (see Patriots 2005). This is why each of his assistant coaches have assistants that have assistants that have interns and so on. Saban is planning for the future. He signed a five year deal with the Dolphins and if he has success I believe he will be a Dolphins for longer than that, maybe our next :hail:Shula.
