The Top of the Draft is the Best Place to Acquire an Elite LT

I brought this up a while back as I was advocating for Jake Long on these boards.

Look at these Tackles taken Top 10 (w/ one @ 11 and one @ 13):

Year.....Spot.......Name...................Drafted to / Team now
1996.......4.......John Ogden.................Ravens / Ravens
1996......10......Willie Anderson...........Bengals / Bengals (RT Now)
1997.......1.......Orlando Pace.................Rams / Rams
1997.......6.......Walter Jones............Seahawks / Seahawks
1998......11......Tra Thomas..................Eagles / Eagles
2000.......3.......Chris Samuels...........Redskins / Redskins
2002.......7.......Bryant McKinnie...........Vikings / Vikings
2002......10......Levi Jones..................Bengals / Bengals
2003......8........Jordan Gross.............Panthers / Panthers (RT Now)
2004......2........Robert Gallery.............Raiders / Raiders (RT Now)
2005.....13.......Jammal Brown..............Saints / Saints
2006......4........D'Brickashaw Ferguson......Jets / Jets
2007......3........Joe Thomas................Browns / Browns
2008......1........Jake Long.................Dolphins / Dolphins

The Busts:

Kyle Turley - 7th pick in 1998 (Out of the league)
Leonard Davis - 2nd pick in 2001 (Pro Bowl RG this past year)
Mike Williams - 4th pick in 2002 (Jags? Out of the league?)
* I won't label Robert Gallery a bust until he stops starting for the Raiders.

3 of the 17 Tackles taken in the top 13 picks over the past 10 years have left the team that drafted them.

If we wanted a Franchise LT, we were going to have to draft him. And I'm happy we did.

I would not label Kyle Turley as a bust. he was a good lineman for quite a few years and Leonard davis is hardly a bust just a better G than tackle.

Great post. Maybe it will shut the Matty Icers up.

I thought from the beginning that Long was the best player in the draft, still does not mean Ryan will not be a very good NFL qb which I predict he will.
He is still a better prospect than beck which has always been the arguement
we have on this board.

agreed, Turley was a beast, but the back injuries plagued his career. Imagine how many times Bosselli would have saved David Carrs *** had he stayed healthy and played at least another 5 years in the league.

that was the post that prompted me to research.

It's unbelievable how some people don't understand the difficulty in acquiring an elite O-Lineman.

This wasn't just the safe pick. History says it was the right one.

Lets not forget Flozell Adams although a 2nd rounder ... The cowboys drafted him and showed him the $$$ not to let him leave.
Its hard to find a good LT in this leage.
Miami wanted Flozell from the start but Jake Long is the next best thing!

not true...theres some elite LTs in the league that went undrafted....now if your tittle had read,"The Draft Is The Best/Safest Place To Acquire An Elite LT" then it would be a lot more acceptable.....
