Ok first of all this is not in any way a scholastic examination of Ohio State but rather part 3 of my Henne v Penny case study... A meaningless, HUGELY opinionated and hopefully a LITTLE entertaining examination of what is fast becoming an age old debate.

The first two parts: 'Stretching the Field is stretching the truth' and 'The Deep Out = Deep Doo Doo'

Part 3: 'The Education of Ted Ginn'

This is in response to the well worn notion that Penny is hurting Ginn's development... Must admit I never really got this one... I have always thought this argument was backasswards. Did Ted really need to learn how to run in a straight line? Was running PAST Corners the skill that he really needed to develop?

I look at the highlight reels on youtube and all he is missing is the superman cape... He sure can fly... BUT...

IMHO That is ALL HE DID WELL when he arrived. He needed to develop an underneath game... Learn body position, fighting through contact, how to be quick not just fast, crisp routes and get early seperation not late... All the stuff he has had to do with Pennington...

IMO Ginn will actually become a MORE complete receiver BECAUSE he played with Chad P. Not in spite of...

I LOVED the look of that deep slant the other night... Reminded me how often Montana/Rice FEASTED on the middle of the field not just the sideline... Where the pass was 15 yards but the run was 75. Got my blood goin'... Synapses firin'... Imagination... ummm... Imagining.

Alright, alright the Henne camp wants to know about the underthrow...

What can I say?? it is what it is... I swear I saw Wilford slow down to catch that Henne TD though, so there... Just kidding... Real truth is JMO but I will trade those 97 yard TD's from our own 3... for the 5 less INT's I get outta Chad P.

yes I know I'm crazy but I just spent an hour and a half writing 3 threads... You should have know that.

i think when people say Penny hurts Ginn, its more hurts his production, not his development... last year alone you could give prob 100 more yards and maybe 2 more TDs if on some deep passes Penny was able to lead Ginn and watch it be 6, instead of Ginn having to come back to the ball and ending up with a 40 yard reception...

Exactly.

Absolutely....playing with Pennington doesn't hurt Ginn's development....it helps it...

What it hurts is his production...

Face it....Ginn isn't Laveurneus Coles.....Ginn isn't going to break tackles on a 14 yard slant and gets yards after catch....he's not even going to try....

That's not as much of an issue in Mike Martz's offense......it is in Dan Hennings...

If Ginn's best attribute is his straightline speed and running by DB's.....then put a quarterback in there that can get him the ball...

If not....trade both of them...

agreed with everything above. penny has helped his development and he might not be where we all hope he's at now without him. the deep ball isn't everything - and ginn already had that.

Ted has made steady progress but everything is right for this to be his breakout year. He has responded to the coaching and now knows what he's doing (and his self confidence has gone up a notch). He will do well with Penny or Henne.
The other feature that I really like about him is that he is a team player. In all the interviews he is low key about himself and talks about Bess, Camarillo, et al as a group. Teddy is an anomaly - a modest WR.

Why not? I know he is not a power guy.. not built to break tackles... But he is one slippery fish... All those kick returns at OSU demonstrate that... I don't know why he can't be a large YAC guy...

If you would've bolded the sentence right after that....there was your answer...

...because he doesn't TRY....

Marvin Harrison was built every bit as slight as Ginn is....but he made yards after the catch just by giving a little effort....breaking a few little arm tackles...this is tackle football....

I want everyone to pay especially close attention to Ted Ginn on EVERY catch he makes....seriously....and point out every time you see him attempt to get upfield rather than look for the ground or the sidelines....

And rather than debate it....we'll keep a statistical category of each one and see which tally is higher...

he doesn't try, wow are you serious? i can name 2 off the top of my head where he was breaking tackles... end around against oakland... slant and YAC against the Bills...

he can be slippery in space, dont give me that doesn't try crap... what a copout

Was it the raiders or bills game where ginn broke about 5 tackles on a trip into the endzone?

Also, I'm not too interested in Ginn's numbers, or production, when we are not in contention for anything huge. When we are on a legitimate path to the superbowl, then I will worry about Ginn's production numbers. Right now while we are a young team, a developing team, is when I think his development to become a more complete receiver is more important than putting up huge numbers.

Serious as hell....you can name 2 off the top of your head? lol

There should be a thread stickied to keep up with this.....and point out every time he falls to the ground versus the times he doesn't....

No more asking each other if they're serious....

I already know what wins....

In the videos I've seen of him he made some big plays on slants. Come across the middle, and catch it running close to full speed. Use that type of play to get the ball into his hands and rely on him to make people miss in the open field. Hopefully we'll see more of that THIS year.

Dont take this the wrong way...but if Teddy Ginn wasnt modest, he would be a complete and utter jackass. He has every reason to be modest and no reason to be arrogant or conceited. Next year, I hope he is a little less modest...for the reason that he had 90 catches, 1200 yards, and 10 TDs. I will tolerate a bit of attitude for that kind of production.

ED...I dont think you understand the nature of this league. Name me one team that has "grown" into SB champions. It doesnt happen in this league. Either you are on a legit path to the SB or you are not. In the past five years, I believe at least three of the teams that have won the SB have been wildcard teams. They didn't go from 5 wins to 7 wins to 9 wins...and so on, until eventually they won the SB. In the NFL you turn around quickly. If Ginn is productive THIS year, our chances to win the SB greatly increase.

We have a chance this year to win it all. We have to get good QB play, and our playmakers on offense and defense need to make plays. If that happens, we have a chance. This year is as good as any, maybe better than next year. Win now.

Well since he is supposed to fast and elusive he should be able to get some extra yards.
