Is it me or does it seem like the coaching staff is a lot more open and candid when talking about the team and even specific players? I've heard things from coaches in the past few weeks that I haven't heard in long time around here. Parcells didn't allow coaches to say much of anything and neither did Saban. It's quite refreshing not to get the normal coach speak that most coaches give when talking about the team or players. What do you think caused the shift in philosophy? I'm thinking the losing and the Martin scandal caused Ross to give a mandate that coaches need to be a little more open and transparent to the media and fans. Thoughts?

I hadn't really thought about it but if they are being more accessible I would say you are right about the reason.

I'll tell you what shocked me was that Philbin actually criticized a player recently in the media yesterday or the day before I think). I forget who, but it was a something he would normally spin as a positive, or as "a work in progress", which is the usual BS we hear in the media. But he actually sounded not harsh, but at least unsatisfied with the player's results when he could have easily put a positive spin on it. Refreshing.

Yes, I see a difference in Joe's approach this year. He seems a bit more comfortable and I think that he learned a lot from the J-mart/Incognito embarassment from last season. The other big factor is that his career mentor and buddy, Mike Sherman, is no longer in the building. He can have a professional relationship with Lazor that sets certain expectations and holds him accountable. Consider that Sherman was his former coach and then gave him his initial opportunity to get into coaching. Sherman got him into Green Bay as O-line coach and then he got the O-Coordinator position. Then when Joe was appointed here, Mike brings his O-line coach (and relative), Jim Turner, his QB coach (and son-in-law), Zack Taylor, and persuades Ireland to draft his star young QB, Ryan Tannehill and Mike brought them all from Texas A & M.
Joe has got closer to the players because he doesn't have to go through Mike, who was the oldest of old school coaches you could find.

I think you are spot on with this. It's a benefit to Joe that he doesn't have that crutch to lean on anymore and he doesn't have to tip-toe around treating a coordinator like a subordinate instead f a mentor.

I am still not much of a Philbin believer, but I will say I like his approach more this year so far than in the past.

Yeah, it was hard to imagine how Philbin and Sherman could have had a proper head coach to coordinator relationship given their history. Glad its over with.

They have definitely been more open to talking about players, but I think that will stop once the season starts. I think a lot of the openness towards the media has more to do with Ireland being gone.

I'm thinking it was getting rid of the last remnant of Parcells (Jeff Ireland).

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Change was needed....at least he recognized that much, whether he is doing to save his job, or it fall under the "too little too late"...at least his is making a change...

All Good points. What really made me take notice is when he said "We don't have a starting left guard on the roster right now" :-o I've NEVER heard a coach be that open about a specific position. I think it's great because WE ALL can see that we don't, and when coaches get on the podium and try to tell us otherwise... pisses me off. Now I will say this about Dallas Thomas and his last performance, There's a reason McCoy is a pro bowler.. it's because he CAN'T be blocked one on one consistently, and i don't care who the guard is. Teams gameplan for players like him. Double teams, chip blocks by the RB etc.. and I don't think we did much of that this last game. But with that being said... I think we should surely see give someone else a shot.

Another year since the death of his son(he did a great job coping), and finally free from the retard Sherman...improvement has been noticeable.

Now just getting rid of Parcels garlic odor in the seat of the executive chair (which might take years) and Jeff's floral wall paper and urine stains from the carpet from the practice facility...
