Like many of you, I was confused over who our best candidate at the #1 pick was. . .dorsey? he seems like a defensive stopper, but he might not fit our system and he could be suffering a bit from his injuries. What about Chris Long? They say he's got a non-stop motor, but he's a big pass rusher, not a run stopper...To a lesser extent, there's even been talk about Run DMC (the greatest nickname ever by the way) in case Ronnie really hasn't recovered yet. and then there's all the talk of trading down (which is probably my #2 option).

Now i know that we have to address our defense and soon, but I believe the setting is ripe for us to take Jake Long out of Michigan. L. J. Shelton was released, and the overall opinion is that Carey would be better back at his other tackle position. Jake Long may not be the sexy pick, but he's the safest pick of the draft, someone who can stabilize an already decent o-line with Samson Satele. As we've seen for the Pats and Colts, a stable o-line does wonders for your offense. Take J Long #1, and then use the rest of the draft for D. Below is an article up on ESPN which backs up some of what I've said. (Notice how Long won the best OL award for the Big 10, ahead of Levi Brown and Joe Thomas, both of whom were top 5 picks in last years' draft).

It would be great to have two bookend All-Pro Tackles and with Satele that would give us the foundation for one of the best offensive lines in the NFL, JMO though.

We want Jake!!!! :woot: Ain't nobody getting around that!!!!

im aboard. i must admit. i havent been on this this guys bandwagon. but 2 sacks in 4 years is hard to ignore. i see him as slightly below joe thomas, pass blocking wise. however. he is triple joe thomas, run blocking wise.

i say get this ground pounder and solidify this line. im tired of seeing this line get descent, only to leave it at that and send it to greatness.

so lets pick him up. give mormino a shot. perhaps faneca. if he doesnt try to clean out the vault.

Ehhh i don't know, i don't think it would be the best pick but it wouldn't be the worst pick either...I'm kind of 50/50 on him

Are you Kidding he only gave up 2 sacks in his 4 year career

not to mention he was only flagged TWICE during his four year start at Michigan, once in his freshman year (false start i think), and the other a holding penalty. Mental toughness!!

Yes he only gave up two sacks in his collegiate career. One was against vernon gholston, and the other was against some guy from Michigan state. He has also only commited two penalties. One as a redshirt freshman (Holding), and this last year (False start). I wasn't so sure of him at first but after his combine I'm on his bandwagon. Jake Long for the #1 please.

Yeah! Giving up 2 sacks in 4 yrs is unbelievable. I wish 1 of our stat geeks on this board(no offense intended=)), could find out about other great NFL tackles and how many sacks they gave up in college. It would be interesting if nothing else.
I feel the D tackles we're considering,(Dorsey, Ellis), just don't fit perfectly with what we're looking for. We need a big V. Wilfork type guy to stuff the middle.
I think J. Long with the 1st and maybe Calais Cambell with the 2nd, if he's there. There are some good, big DE's in this draft. Good for the 3-4 D. Next maybe a corner, next maybe a TE, there are a few good, big tight ends in this draft..thoughts?

I'm on board with all of that. I could live with Faneca and Mormino at Guard- I have a good feeling about Mormino.

What's amazing is some guys use the V.Gholston sack as a measuring stick against J.Long. One freaking sack and he's not worthy of the first pick unbelievable. The best thing about J.Long at the combine was the announcers saying you could always tell when Long was running drills he was just better then everyone else, in other words he stood out and his talent is undeniable.

I just don't see a top five pick when I put on the tape.

He struggles too often with fast defenders who can get to the edge and strong defenders who can get underneath his pads. I have never seen a player as highly rated as Long put on his backside so often. It just concerns me.

well. thats what the stats say. plus his run blocking is just brutal. i watched the florida game. my god!!!! he destroyed derrick harvey and whomever else they put in front of him. on pass plays, he completly sealed off his side. on running plays. he just drove his guy and sometimes another guy, into the freakin earth. so. that spells attitude and athletisism to me. i dont know about you but carey and satele seem like a good start. lets put ol jake in the mix and see what we get.:hi5:

I would like to find some of this so called tape where he ends up on his back side. Giving up 2 sacks for career desn't sound like he struggles against speed defenders. Jake Long would be a great pick. People don't like because it isn't a sexy pick. It will be when you see the holes RB will have to run through.
