I have been Nick Saban's harshest critic on this board. I have been so critical for so long I was threatened with being banned from this board because I was allegedly "being provacative".

Nick was defended at every turn and people took it personal when I offered up any criticism of him. And I tried in vain to explain to people it wasn't personal, it was the performance of the team.

And now that Saban is on the verge of leaving the Miami Dolphins and taking the job at Alabama, some of those same defenders of Saban are calling him the most disgusting names, slinging the most hurtful insults and slurring him to embearassing levels.

So much so is the criticism of Saban personal and unwarranted that I have taken to being his staunchest defender.

He is not a bad man. He does not lack integrity. He is not inherently dishonest (any more than he has to be to do that job). He is a highly intelligent man with a desire to (possibly) works somewhere else. That's all. And he has every right to do that.

Now I think he is STILL a failure and I will be happy to see him leave the Fins. But you some of you people are taking far too personally. And the irony is it's some of the same guys that were accusing me of "hating" Saban when I would criticize him week after week.

Wrong about him as a coach and wrong about his integrity. Ironic.

im here to agree with tampa..if he leave i will be happy ..he put this team tgoether and it stunk cause of him and he has no 1 else to blame if he leaves then so be it but please dont make him out 2 be some type of god...look at this years draft when he took allen over santonio holmes...please dont tell me allen is gonna be better then holmes in a few ywars this guy has clue what to do when he gets on the field..he got ran over by manning on sunday

People take games far too seriously in general. Football is simply something there to entertain us and so many of us let it upset us greatly. There's a lot more to get upset about in life than football. Just enjoy the good times and don't take the downside of it personally.

TampaFinsFan01, this is the very definition of being a contrarian.

I humbly accept your accolades. But I am really not THAT great. As to why more of you don't listen to me, its puzzling to me as well. Anyway, Happy New Year.

I seriously doubt that Saban is going to go back to the college level. He may be disappointed about how the Dolphins have done this year, but that doesn't mean he's ready to bail out. From what I hear, Saban is very thorough kind of guy. It probably would bother the heck out of him to leave a job half done. Unless there's something going on behind the scenes that we don't know about, I bet Nick is hell bent on getting the Dolphins back to it's days of making the playoffs every other year or so.

I think if it came down to the money, Huizenga would probably restructure his contract a bit to get it closer to Alabama's offer. I'm sure Wayne realizes that one of THE biggest things that affects a head coaches' job status is who quarterback is. Saban and his staff had a really big fork in the road moment in January of last year when they were trying to decide between Brees and Culpepper. That decision got into areas that Saban simply doesn't have the expertise. Saban had to rely heavily on the prognosis of the medical staff for Brees and Culpepper. I bet Saban and his medical staff wish they had a crystal ball in January of last year but they didn't. At the time it looked like Brees might be one of those guys with ongoing, long term problems with his throwing arm ... where they can't throw the deep ball like they used to, etc. There's plenty of QBs and MLB pitchers that just aren't the same after injuries like the one Brees had.

Of course the fans expect Saban and his staff to have a crystal ball and then BLAME HIM LATER for picking "the wrong horse" in the race. Do you blame the captain of the team if he chooses tails and the coin toss comes up heads? Nobody knew what the heck was going to happen with Brees and Culpepper. It would be great if you could just skip ahead to the end of the novel to find out, but you can't. Like a lot of suspense novels, the story still might have some unexpected twists and turns. Brees could re-injure his shoulder again and never quite be the same again. Culpepper could get back all his mobility and old skills and come back next year and have a season even better than he did in 2004. Saban COULD end up looking like a genius for gambling on Culpepper. Or maybe not. Who knows? That's what makes football interesting.

I know one thing, I just want to see the Dolphins FINALLY find a worthy successor to Marino. It's been a 5 year drought of not making the playoffs. In this league, it's pretty much a requirement that you have a top 10 QB to go far in the playoffs. It's getting to the point where you need top 10 QB just to make the playoffs AT ALL. Based on Saban's press conference yesterday, I suspect that Saban wants to "finish the job" here in Miami and do whatever it takes to make the Dolphins offense one of the most explosive teams in the NFL. We already have a damn good defense at most of the positions. Once we get the magic formula on offense, I think big things could happen in 2007.
