I have to admit the pick caught me by surprise, but it makes sense to me IF (and only if) White can be a credible 3rd WR.

The key to the wildcat is that it is run with the players from the base formation. The D never knows if it will be wildcat until the Dolphins break the huddle as there is no substitution.

Most of the comment on White suggests he can replace Pennington/Brown for wildcat plays but surely this would give the game away. BUT, if he can play WR, the 'fins can have him on the field anyway (at least a series at a time). Thus if they go wildcat they have a genuine run/pass threat without tipping their hand, plus the option to use Ronnie/Ricky/Pennington in the play as well. With Dan Henning running the show, this could become a total nightmare for the D. If this is what the Trifecta have in mind then I am sold.

However, if the plan is to sub Pennington out for a series I am not so sure - then you end up with a shared QB role which never really seems to work as it detracts from your starter.

I will give them the benefit of the doubt but I guess none of us will really know 'till we see it.

I suspect that if he shows up in the Wildcat, it's going to be from Ricky Williams' position, and not necessarily replacing Brown or Pennington. In that case you can still utilize his speed and running ability, but he has the option of pulling it up and launching it down field, kind of like an option on crystal meth.

I also think the coaches are looking at opening up the formation far beyond the standard personnel sets, and that the Wildcat is just a starting point.

Good point by both of you... I was thinking the exact same thing :hi5:

With Pat White in the wildcat, he gives it just what is needed to make it work practically everytime it is used. He can line up in multiple positions.

QB
WR
RB
Slot
He can take direct snap
He can be thrown to in the flat, and then throw downfield.
End arounds

The options are endless.

Defenses will be scratching their heads.

Great pick.

The only thing stopping miamis offense is Henning and Sparanos own creativity at this point. They're free to draw up just about whatever the hell they want now.

Pat White

I really like the pick, but I am not sure what they are going to do with him. I have a friend that is the biggest WVU fan ever and I have been to a few games and Pat can flat out run!!! I know that the draft guys got him listed at WR but could be the perfect fit in the wildcat backfield maybe in a wishbone type with ronnie on one side and him on the other???

Even if they use him for WR reverses to keep the Defense honest, because last year some teams were learning how to beat it (Ravens) and the way they did it was pressure in the middle before the wildcat could set up, but with a few more reverses that take huge chunks of yardage then they would be forced to stop cheatting up!!!

I agree there are endless options, but my point is that he needs to be on the field in the first place - if he cannot play a 'regular' position it will just be a giveway whenever we sub him in. Therefore I expect to see him at third WR, but he could line up at RB in the Pro Set for a regular play and stay in the game - he is probably a credible running threat from the backfield judging by his gamefilm.

Couldn't Pat be the third down Qb or short distance Qb? Would scare the crap out of defences when they have to spread out and stop him from running or throwing.

Like someone else mentioned, having him as a situational QB OTHER THAN with gimmick plays etc is not a good idea. I hate seeing teams sub out their starting QB for a slash QB to pick up some short yardage or something - total slap in the face of the starter.

He can line up in any position but how many can he truly play.

imo, all of the above. the guy totaled over 10,000 yards at WV and some doubt his ability to play 3rd receiver? I'm going to go out on a limb and predict he does just fine at WR.

He has never ran a route, never played receiver in college so yes there is great reason to have doubt. If its so damn easy to play receiver than why do we keep talking about three years for guys that have played it 4 years in college. If Speed is all you need then The Oakland pick should be a stud also. I just love drafting receivers that run 4.55 and never have ran a route.

I'm thinking anyone who totals over 10,000 yards,(including the NCAA record for rushing yards as a QB), knows a little something about attacking defenses and running routes.

So any qb with decent speed should be able to play receiver.
