But seriously folks........what if???
Is it really all that unlikely that Manning and Wayne and even Clark all go to AZ. They have the cap, we really don't.
Big time pressure is on the Browns this year and now, after the Skins tradeup, even more so, to make a move at QB. Surely they will acquire Flynn or draft Tannehill.
Say the Seahawks acquire Flynn in free agency; again they have more cap than we do to acquire FA's.
If these things do happen, wouldn't it indeed be the perfect time to embrace a major rebuild?
New coaching staff, new QB, new offense, new defense; the argument for rebuild is overwhelming.
What is really meant by rebuild? IMO, rebuild means, new coaches and systems, letting high priced FA's go, new restructured contracts for high priced veterans, trading certain players who may be over paid.
Getting younger and building mostly through the draft. Any FA's signed need to be 28 or under.
Most of these things have already been done. I would like to go all the way with the rebuild for once. I like Brandon Marshall, but when getting down to brass tacks, he doesn't earn the money he is getting. He IS overpaid. So what, he is still good and the best we have, lots of NFL players are overpaid. Yes, but not on teams that are really rebuilding. Look at what some other teams are doing with Freeny on the trade block and Hutchinson being released.
Marshall is very tempting trade bailt now after he has made some personal changes and killed in the pro bowl. I would take a good offer for him. I think the Bears covet him. If they offered a 1st and a 4th I would take it and clear some nice cap room to extend Long,Starks and Wake.
Yeremiah Bell needs to restructure and take a pay cut, so does Dansby. They are both overpaid. Dansby may have a strong bargaining position but Bell could released outright. Bess could be traded as well if the offer was right. Bess has some of the best hands in football but he just so slow, he can never break anything deep, or get deep himself. The texans badly need a guy like Bess for their offense. They may even go as high as a 3rd if they really believed having him could take some coverage off Andre Johnson. Bess's durability is a big plus.
Merling needs to drop weight and compete at DE in the 4-3.
I think the Dolphins should defintely set their sights on Luke Kuiechly in the draft. The way the draft order is going it looks like things are really set up for Kuechly to have a big slide if we don't draft him at #8. The Eagles have been his mocked destination most of this offseason but with Atlanta not re-signing Lofton, most now think the Eagles are going to sign him. I concur. No Eagles trade up.
The Chargers could very well be extremely desperate to get Reiff or Martin. McNeill is gone and there is no deal with Gaither. Dolphins accept a 2nd and 5th and move to the #18 spot in the 1st round.
Young FA's: FS Reggie Nelson of course......Carl Nicks OG....gotta spend Marshall's money somewhere and this is money well spent, the best OG in football and just 26. A deal similar to Jahri Evans with a little more money to make him the highest paid OG should do it. DE Trevor Scott....A guy who still has huge upside if he can stay healthy. Should come cheap,Raiders have big cap issues. Kevin Smith RB. Kevin Smith had 4TD's and a 5 yd av in very limited snaps last year. He can be very effective when healthy. He should be cheap and he is still really young. Risky yes, but not that much if he isn't paid much.
With these FO moves the Dolphins should be looking very very good going into next off season.
Dolphins trade down from the Bears spot with the Packers who covet Nick Perry, this drafts best prospect at 3-4 OLB. Dolphins receive 3rd and 4th round comp.
Draft:
1st:............Luke Kuechly...................MLB................................HOF bound IMO
1st.............Stephen Hill.....................WR...............I don't think this one is the project he is being made out to be, and he is an excellent blocker, an elite blocking WR. The Pats are probably going to sign Brandon Lloyd. I think Hill would be there. I like Hill as a perfect companion for Weeden to grow with the next 8 years.
2nd.............Brandon Weeden.............QB...................................IMO, the best thing that could happen to the Dolphins in a long long time.
3rd..............Brandon Boykin...............CB...................................Dolphins need a nickel CB. Boykin is projected to play nickel right away in the NFL.Carroll and Wilson could be in trouble. I look for Vince Agnew to compete this year as well. Agnew may be the best pure athlete in camp.
3rd..............Michael Egnew................TE..................................Extraordinary athlete who I am convinced could be coached up to become a good blocker.
3rd.....(I had Brooks here but he looks 2nd-ish)...Tony Bergstrom OG.....I love Bergstrom as well as Brooks, he's just a lot older, but I could see Bergstrom beat out Incognito from the get go.
4th..............Derek Wolf...................DE/DT.............................If he really lasts this long he's an absolute steal here. Very legitimate pass rusher.
4th..............Devon Wylie.................KR/PR/SR/RB........................Boom or bust, durability is a huge issue but if he can stay healthy he is Welker on steroids.
4th..............Olivier Vernon...............OLB/DE............................Upside,upside,upside....had a good pro day
5th..............Tom Compton...............OT.................................Will compete at RT. Dolphins will finally have some depth at OT
6th..............Chase Ford...................TE.................................Could be a huge steal here.
7th/FA..........Chandler Harnish............QB.................................Only real knock on Harnish is arm strength. That's a big nock, but as 7th/FA I love him as a #3.
7th/FA..........Blake DeChristopher.........OG/OT...........................A better player than Garner. Blake has graded excellently for the last few years. Severely underrated IMO.
7th/FA...........Brian Peters..................S/OLB....................A guy to project as a TE coverage specialist.
7th/FA...........Scott Weige..................C......................Should be a Dolphin FA priority. Need to have a developing backup OC. Hopefully he could be kept on PS for a year.
7th/FA................Marcus Kuhn................DT......................DL depth
Roster:
QB.............Weeden,Moore,Harnish
RB.............Bush,Smith,Thomas,Hilliard
FB.............Charles Clay
WR............Hill,Hartline,Gates,Wylie,Wallace,Moore
TE.............Fasano,Egnew,Ford
OT............Long,Murtha,Compton,Jerry
OC/OG.......Pouncey,Nicks,Bergstrom,Incognito,DeChristopher
DT............Starks,Odrick,McDaniel,Isaako(futures contract)
DE............Wake,Wolf,Merling,Scott
MLB..........Kuechly,Misi
OLB..........Dansby,Burnett,Trusnick,Vernon
S.............Bell,Nelson,Jones,Clemons,Peters
CB............Davis,Smith,Boykin,Agnew,Carroll
Feilds,Carp,Denny
This team would be balanced but the rushing attack with this O-line could be devastating. Add a veteran WR in FA in 2013 and draft DL and it's playoffs for years to come.
