MIAMI DOLPHINS: Putting pressure on Ajayi to step up. Arian Foster winning the starting job with the Dolphins is a testament to the veteran running back's work in returning from an Achilles tear at age 30.
It's also an indictment of Jay Ajayi's offseason and training camp, as the 2015 fifth-round pick was supposed to be the No. 1 back for Miami.
But along the way, according to a team source and another person informed of Ajayi's status with the team, Ajayi didn't respond to the challenge Foster's arrival presented. The Dolphins' coaches wanted to see Ajayi dig in, work hard and force the team to keep him in the top spot while Foster -- who signed in July -- complemented him. Instead, they saw Ajayi sulk and struggle through a subpar preseason (18 carries for 49 yards and a fumble).
The hope now is Ajayi will finally respond to seeing Foster begin the season as the starter.
"The message has been received," one source said.

We'll see. Ajayi only averaged 3.8 ypc last year and he looks worse this year. His hands have been really suspect too...for a guy that I thought caught a lot of passes at Boise State.

It can't be very easy seeing the team sign someone over your head just as you thought you were getting the lead slot.

A bit of sulking is pretty likely from most of these young kids. So long as he now gets the message that it's a meritocracy, hopefully we'll see more of the good side of Ajayi and not the very pedestrian play we got in PS.

Im not holding out much hope for him. Drake and Pead need to be on alert (once Pead gets healthy)

I never got the feeling he wasn't working hard. I just noticed a lack of understanding of the position as it fits in this scheme. Was he just not taking to coaching? sounds like that may be the issue.

And even though i am not a born again Gase fan, its kudos to him for making this decision and sending the message. Those who dont produce, dont start. As it should be. Hope be keeps that up.

I don't think it is a lack of effort, it is a lack of talent. He has no feel for the game. He has pretty good power but just blows up into the first thing he hits, which a lot of time is another Dolphin.

He's just not as talented as people thought. It's not like DVP where we've seen what he can do. Ajayi has never delivered at the NFL level...we're still waiting for him to "rise to the occasion," which may never happen.

NFL = Not For Long
Better show up every day and bust your ass... or before you know it your riding the bench.

At this point, none of the RB's have impressed me. Sure, it's amazing how far Foster has come along from his injury. But the preseason didn't offer much hope for our running game.

You're not convinced by Foster's 0.7 ypc in the preseason? Not convinced by some on here claiming he's the best signing since Grimes? Hmmm....

I don't mind messages being sent to players like Ajayi, Parker or Phillips. However, I wish that stuff would stay in clubhouse and not leaked to the public.

I had and still have high hopes for Ajayi. BS that he doesn't have the talent. He does but this is the NFL and you can't get by just with talent. I hope he gets it

Ozzy rules!!
