What is the plan to fix the Miami Dolphins? Further, how do you change the current culture surrounding Miami Dolphin’s football?
I-Hire the RIGHT Head Coach
The Dolphins have tried many routs in an attempt to find their next Don Shula but all have failed miserably. Nick Saban, who was the best collegiate coach at the time he was hired, had the Dolphins to 9-7 in his first year but he decided the NFL was not for him and went running to Alabama.
II-Trading Cameron Wake and/or Mike Wallace
This won’t be popular by any means but sometimes you need to add resources (draft picks) to install a new regime. Cameron Wake is one of the best pass-rushers in the NFL but he will be 33 years old when the 2015 NFL season starts and trading him would save Miami over $7.4 million against the salary cap
III-Create Salary Cap Space
The Miami Dolphins are rolling over $9.1 million in cap space that they did not use in 2014 and are slated to be at $140 million owed to players which is exactly what the NFL salary cap limit is as of today. What this means that if the NFL keeps the salary cap at $140 million then the Miami Dolphins are $9.1 million under the cap with Jared Odrick, Jimmy Wilson, Charles Clay, and Samson Satele being unrestricted free agents.
plus
Shelley Smith-OG ($2.7 million)
· Brian Hartline-WR ($3.1 million)
· Brandon Gibson ($3.2 million)
· Randy Starks-DT ($5 million)
· Dannell Ellerbe ($5.6 million)
· Courtland Finnegan ($5.4 million)
· Brandon Fields ($3.1 million)
As I mentioned above releasing these seven players frees up $28.1 million in cap space which would give the Dolphins $37.1 in cap space heading into free agency. This is a tremendous scenario as the only player you’d be missing is Brandon Fields.
IV-Find a Position for Dion Jordan
Dion Jordan was the number three overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft. The Dolphins traded up with the Oakland Raiders to select Jordan and to say he has been a major disappointment would be an understatement. The blame doesn’t fall squarely on Jordan’s shoulders but we can certainly pin two suspensions costing him six games of the season on him. The rest of the blame goes on the coaching staff namely Kevin Coyle who does not know how to utilize Jordan.
V-Draft Strategy
I wouldn’t say that Dennis Hickey did a bad job when it comes to the 2014 NFL draft as JaWuan James and Jarvis Landry have proven to be solid players in their first season in the league and I feel Billy Turner could be a future pro-bowl caliber right guard. There are two things that the Miami Dolphins need to accomplish via the draft and free agency and that is to get tougher and more physical especially in the trenches and they need to find a couple impact players. Below I am going to name my current "man-crush" list for the Miami Dolphins as it relates to the NFL draft
Round One: Brandon Scherff-Left Guard-Iowa
Analysis: As I mentioned above I feel like Scherff is an instant pro-bowl caliber player and is a far superior player than Notre Dame’s Zach Martin whom the Dallas Cowboys drafted in this draft position in 2014.
Round Two: Dorial Beckham-Green-Wide Receiver-Oklahoma
Analysis: There is a lot of risk here but this 6"5 marvel is built like Calvin Johnson and could be the big-play receiver that the Dolphins have lacked for quite some time.
Round Three: Jay Ajayi-Running-Back-Boise State
Analysis: The Dolphins have their speed back in Lamar Miller but when it is 3rd and 1 they have no one to rely on. Ajayi is a physical runner with a style reminiscent of Marshawn Lynch.
Round Four: Paul Dawson-Linebacker-TCU
Analysis: Paul Dawson is a tough player that is disruptive at the line of scrimmage and stout against the run.
Round Five: Kysheon Jarrett-Safety-Virginia Tech
Analysis: He could immediately fight for a starting position with Walt Aikens and if not will be a great special teams player initially.
Round Six: Rakeem Cato-Quarterback-Marshall
Analysis: The Dolphins need a backup quarterback as Matt Moore is an unrestricted free agent again and it is not likely that he is back in Miami. Cato is a mature player that has been a tremendous collegiate player and would be a good young player to take a gamble on late.
Round Seven: Austin Shepherd-Offensive Tackle-Alabama
Analysis: Nothing more than a depth signing for a reliable/dependable player groomed under Nick Saban.
