Hawks acquire A. Johnson from Mavs

Anthony Johnson is back in Atlanta for his third stint with the Hawks.

The Atlanta Hawks sent this year's second-round draft pick to Dallas on Thursday in exchange for veteran guard Anthony Johnson, who will begin his third stint with the team.

Johnson, 32, previously played in 112 games with the Hawks from 1998-2000 and 2000-01, averaging 3.6 points and 1.8 assists.

"We're happy to be able to bring Anthony Johnson back to Atlanta," Hawks president Billy Knight said. "He provides us with another veteran presence, and brings a great deal of regular season and postseason experience to our club."

The acquisition of Johnson is another attempt by Knight to bolster the point guard position, where free-agent addition Speedy Claxton, who was signed in the offseason to a four-year, $25 million deal, has been a disappointment.

Decent trade, a 2nd round pick aint worth anything, and they desperately need a PG, Speedy Claxton turned out to be the biggest bust of the year

If the Hawks had the brains to pick Chris Paul in the first place, they wouldn't have to worry about the Anthony Johnsons of the world.

Quiet deadline so far. There's just nothing cooking. Kidd and Carter to the City of Los Angeles appears to be a dead deal and it doesn't look like Mike Bibby's going anywhere, despite the Cavs' best efforts.

Deadline buzz

While it remains doubtful that a blockbuster deal will occur involving Jason Kidd, Pau Gasol or Vince Carter before the 3 p.m. trade deadline, there is still a possibility. As one GM said, "A lot of GMs want to wait until the last minute to see if they get any better offers. That's usually when deals go down."

Here then is what we've learned so far:

• The Blazers and Raptors are close to a deal that would send Juan Dixon to Toronto for Fred Jones, according to a league source. Dixon (8.9 points in 22.6 minutes) has been stuck behind rookie Brandon Roy and might benefit from playing in the Raptors' faster-paced offense. Jones (7.8 points in 22.7 minute) is an Oregon native and University of Oregon grad who should benefit from a homecoming. If nothing else, the former Slam Dunk champ will join Travis Outlaw in giving the Blazers two players who can really throw it down.

• Gasol appears to be staying put in Memphis, although it could change with one phone call. Bulls GM John Paxson has been playing his cards close to the vest, but is not expected to change his mind about giving up Luol Deng or Ben Gordon in a trade for the Grizzlies' 7-footer. Paxson has been checking on the availability of other power forwards around the league (Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Nick Collison), according to sources, which could mean he's seeking a backup plan to help Chicago land a low-post threat.

Despite reports to the contrary, the Bulls have no real interest in Zach Randolph, according to sources.

• Mike James appears headed back to Houston, possibly for the soon-to-be-retired Bob Sura and a first-round pick, according to a league source.
Another player would have to be included by the Rockets to make it work. Steve Novak is considered a possibility.

James has been unhappy in Minnesota since bolting Toronto last summer to sign a four-year, $24 million contract. The veteran guard recently lost his starting job to rookie Randy Foye, and it was no secret that the T'wolves were shopping him around the league. Minnesota reportedly was asking teams to take Eddie Griffin in any deal for James, but has apparently backed off in recent days.

The T'wolves, however, were much more adamant about receiving a first-round pick in any deal for James, according to another league source with knowledge of Minnesota's dealings. If the T'wolves continue to insist on Griffin going out -- as well as a first-round pick -- this deal to the Rockets could be scuttled. But for now it appears likely that James will get his wish to be a key contributor on a winning team, and back in the Houston area where he and his wife were building a new home.

Kings trying to ship out Bibby before trade deadline

As potential trades go, the best ones were either dehydrated, prostrate or about to have their plugs pulled. But with less than 24 hours to go, the Cleveland Cavaliers were making a final all-out attempt at reviving their candidate patient.

His name is Mike Bibby, and the Cavs were still hoping to acquire his contract by the NBA trade deadline of 3 p.m. ET Thursday.

League sources report that the Cavaliers spent the early part of Wednesday trying to acquire Bibby in a multi-team deal that would have left Sacramento with power forward Drew Gooden, point guard Marcus Banks (via Phoenix) and the expiring contract of center Scot Pollard, whose $2.2 million comes off the books this summer.

The Kings thought about it for awhile before, said no thanks -- then invited Cleveland to come back with another offer that includes more expiring dollars. I'm speculating here: Gooden, a No. 1 pick and another expiring contract to go with Pollard's.

That's a shame, because Randolph is *EXACTLY* what the Bulls need. They need a legit low-post scorer and can afford to live with Randolph's defensive lapses, given their team-wide defensive muscle.

How Billy Knight hasn't been fired is beyond me.. Knight lets 3 good PG's go in that draft and picks Marvin Williams, who was voted most likely to mirror Tim Thomas's career earlier.

Chicago, Cleveland, and LAC all failed miserably.

They'll stay right where they are now.

The Eastern Conference is officially Detroit's.

As far as I can tell, the only reason Knight continues to draw a paycheck is because the Hawks' ownership situation remains in flux. Since no one knows exactly who owns the Hawks, no one's pulling the trigger on canning their incompetent GM.

Well, news of deals usually trickles in until around 6 or 7 pm. Just because we don't know about a trade right now doesn't mean it isn't done. It could be that the news just hasn't broken yet.

How long is Wade out? Seems there hasn't been a definitive report yet, and frankly, I'm not counting them out until and unless Wade is out for 2 months.

We're hearing 6 weeks the most, and surgery in the offseason.

However, I'm basing everything excluding Miami because of uncertainty.

Btw, word out've Miami is that we were pushing hard for Bibby today.

And yeah, usually, deals pop out/get finalized in the evening........

Official: Bibby Staying In Sacramento
22nd February, 2007 - 3:38 pm

Sacramento Bee -
Despite a host of efforts to trade Mike Bibby, a team official says that he will remain with the Kings.

The Cleveland Cavaliers continued a push to land Bibby early Thursday morning but was unable to come to a compromise.

Just reported on RealGM from the Sacramento Bee. Bibby's staying with the Queens.

6 weeks would put Wade out until the first week of April. Assuming, for the sake of argument, that he returns to the lineup on 4/8, he'd miss 23 games. The Heat's schedule for those 23 games isn't that tough. They've got the Pistons twice, the Cavs twice and one each against the Mavericks and Bulls, but the rest of the schedule is pretty soft. If they can tread water (say, 9 wins or better) they can still make a push for the 7 or 8 seed.

Disappointed Orlando didn't try and get Vince. Why not send Hill's expiring mega contract, some picks and perhaps a perhaps a young player or two like Nelson or Ariza?

If they wanted any shot at doing damage in the East, they had to try and do something. Now they'll probably just make it in and get hammered early.
