The Quarterback Whisperer: Lee holds the key to Dolphins' QB future

If the Dolphins bring in a veteran free-agent quarterback (such as Billy Volek or Todd Collins), you can bet it's because Lee believes Beck is still a year away. If the Dolphins sign a veteran and draft a quarterback in the early rounds, that will be a clear indication that Lee doesn't believe Beck is the Dolphins' quarterback of the future.

I agree with this thought....I had the same feeling myself, althought I feel that the Bucs will waive or trade Simms and Parcells may feel that combination worked well in the past.

But be assured that the reason Parcells brought in David Lee so quickly was because he sees potential in Beck. Now it's up to Beck -- and Lee -- to turn that potential into the Dolphins' starting quarterback for 2008.

Now this doesn't make sense....the reason why Lee was hired first could be that he doesn't have faith nor see potential in Beck. Seems to me that would make a far better reason. Another reason as so stated is he's covering his bases...among outher things, so that he can be sure he has the most important position on the field taken care of for the future....lets remember we are talking about the future here...and not the present only.

If he didnt see potential in Beck then why get a QB coach so fast? There would be no need. He brought the QB coach in first to evaluate and develop Beck.

I think if they bring in a Vet QB then Beck is probably a year out from starting. If they take a QB with the first pick then its obvious they dont feel Beck is the solution, but I would expect them to take a QB somewhere in the draft, just not with the first pick. That doesnt mean Beck wont work out.

You can also theorize that the QB position has been the achilles heel of the Dolphins for over 10 years and Parcells wants to have the best chance for that to succeed. Him realizing that it has been a major weakness makes sense for Parcells to address it first and not take a chance Lee makes other plans before he could sign him. IMO just another sign that Wayne has finally made the right decision for turning the Dolphins around.

great read. i hope he can help Beck develop into the QB we need and have been missing since Marino

I don't disagree that Lee being brought in had a purpose of seeing exactly what we have with Beck, but that doesn't mean Tunaland won't bring in a veteran QB, even if it's a Volek or Collins...That is the Tunas' way...he likes having veterans mixed in with his team...It's a way of having a fall back if Beck falters and having a veteran in there (particularly on game days) to drop in to the lineup. He's always had either two nearly equal QBs or a veteran to fall back on in case his youngster has problems...

I would be surprised if he doesn't bring in a more veteran QB like Volek, Collins, Leftwich, Culpepper, or whoever...if he does, it doesn't mean the competition is open necessarily...

My colleague, Joe Mayes, wrote an interesting profile piece on our new quarterbacks coach David Lee:

Hopefully, John Beck, will make Lee look like a genius in '08 and beyond.

Thanks for the link Hugo! It's good to have everything back to normal around here so that we can all sorts of posts and articles and news again.

As for the article, this mimics everything I've been stating from a common sense standpoint since Parcells was named to his spot. Every hire and statement points to the Dolphins giving Beck every tool possible to develop and mature and become our franchise signal caller. Lee is a huge part of that, as is Beck - who has stated that he knows they're gonna make him earn his job, and he's approaching the coming months by training even harder.

if our oline can cont. to play better i see know need for a f.agent.
we have beck and we can draft another qb if we need one.

I hope all this about Lee bears out to be true. I seem to remember a lot of talk about Cam and Terry Shea as "quarterback whisperers" as well.

Yeah damn those two for not developing a rookie QB into a pro bowler in 1 season. Geez! :err:

They both did an abyssmal job handling the QB situation. Trent Green was a waste and the weekly Lemon-Beck watch was a joke. Surely you can't disagree with that?
