The reason McCoy thinks he didnt get the job.

If this is true then Id have to agree that this front office is doomed. You cant Hire a HC just because he is willing to hire the DC you like most.

THE HC position is the most important in terms of coaching. You dont hold a first time head coach hostage and force his DC and OC on him. Esp in todays day and age when the HC is not only not guaranteed a few seasons but often is fired mid season based on success, or lack there of, of the team.

You have to allow a head coach to hire who HE believes is the man for the job.

I am admittedly a McCoy guy. However I am not the type of fan that wont give Philbin the benefit of the Doubt. I just truly think that McCoy was the man for the Job. Hopefully im proved wrong this year! :dolphins:

Seems during the McCoy interview, the topic of defensive coordinator came up. And the Dolphins told McCoy they really liked Todd Bowles and would like him to hire Bowles as the defensive coordinator.
This is interesting on many fronts because it suggests the team at the time already knew Bowles was not going to be selected as the head coach and was already planning another job for him. It's also interesting because as of late last night, the club had not told Bowles anything about becoming defensive coordinator. I'm told the only conversation between Bowles and Ireland Friday night was when the GM told the interim coach the Dolphins were hiring Philbin.At any rate, McCoy didn't agree to hiring Bowles as his defensive coordinator. He told the Dolphins that as a first time head coach, and an offensive-minded coach at that, he'd like to hire an experienced defensive coordinator. He told the Dolphins he'd like someone that had done the job and succeeded in the job previously so he could concentrate more on upgrading the Miami offense.Todd Bowles, you must understand, has never been a defensive coordinator.But the Dolphins insisted. And McCoy pushed back.The Dolphins spoke of how well-regarded Bowles is and McCoy made the point that it is irregular to force an assistant on a new coach when that assistant just lost a job derby to the new head coach and that assistant is not experienced in the job the team wants him to carry out. It can be uncomfortable for all parties.It wasn't contentious. But McCoy had definite ideas about people he'd like to interview for the job. And the Dolphins -- once they found out that Steve Spagnuolo was already hired elsewhere -- had definite ideas about Bowles.​
Ultimately, McCoy told the team he would be more than happy to include Bowles in the interview process for a defensive coordinator. He'd be happy to meet Bowles. But he declined to make any promises to hire Bowles.

The more I read about McCoy, the more I'm glad we didn't hire him. He just seems to lack professionalism, openly talking to the media about his position with a franchise that he isn't even a part of. I thought it last week when his agent said he was confident he was the outstanding candidate and then he turned down the Raiders job because he was sure he was getting the Miami job. Glad we chose Philbin.
 
I can guarantee you that is not the only reason Philbin was hired over McCoy. Not every HC gets to pick his own coordinators and it does not mean the FO is doomed.....:rolleyes:
 
Well I agree with McCoys reasons if that is true and it sounds reasonable. I think maybe he should have sucked it up if he wanted a head coaching gig because I expect Denver's offense to fall much like wildcat did and thus all his interest will quite diminish. Im not sure if philben agreed to take Bowles either . Its apparent that Bowles was never a serious canidate for the head coach job though.
 
To those who think front office is doomed now, imagine how the FO would be if we hired McCoy?
 
I dod think as a head coach you should be able to hire your coordinators but if you remember we have a history of hamstringing our new coaches. Cameron had to keep Capers and others, Mularkey was forced to run Linhans offense.

Can you give me an example in which a coordinator was heaped upon a first time coach? Very irregular.

What did Ross and Ireland not interview Joe long before McCoy - it was Jeff who wasn't sold on Joe and it was on Jeff to prove himself right and guess what after hours of trying to twist Ross' arms off Jeff - lost (so McCoy lost too)
 
If we were gonna hire someone lacking a verbal governor, Zimmer would have been my much preferable Mike.

Keep in mind that this is the same Armando who said yesterday morning that Philbin had been eliminated from the head coach search. Now he says that Philbin and the Dolphins had an agreement on Thursday night. There has been a lot of media rumors and speculations about the coaching search the past three weeks and more so than not, they have been incorrect. I am sure there will be a few that take this article as 100% fact to fuel whatever fire they have interest in burning, but this to me and most rational people is another report in a long line of reports. Maybe this was partially the reason they went with Philbin, but there is a good chance Armando is just blowing more smoke. How can your trust this as fact when just yesterday Armando said Philbin was eliminated?
 
I do not think McCoy's position was that unreasonable.
 
That whole article was crap. There are many, many more factors that Ross and Company are taking into account when interviewing these candidates. And, regardless, it is hard to believe that any boss/owner would throw that down a candidates throat during the interview process.
 
Philbin is much more familiar with the 3-4 defense anyway. He spent 4 years at Iowa under Kirk Ferentz who runs the 3-4 and the last 3 years in Green Bay they've been running the 3-4. I think that would give Philbin an advantage in the meeting rooms when they put the game plans together over McCoy who apparently wanted to move on to something other than the 3-4, he just wanted an experienced DC so he can concentrate on the offense...isn't that the same thing Cam Cameron did? He let Dom Capers run the Defense and paid no attention to it, just concentrated on the offense? I think Saban did the same but he let the OC run the offense and he just concentrated on the defense.
