Putting Tannehill in risk-taking scenarios usually results in more turnovers, and when Tannehill turns the ball over or has a bad game, Miami doesn't seem to bode. When Tannehill is forced to go into gunslinger mode, he turns the ball over and it hurts the team.

But, when Tannehill is careful and takes a very calculated approach, taking high-percentage throws on short routes, Miami doesn't seem to move the ball well. One bad play can push Miami back and ruin an entire drive, and it often does.

So what's the happy medium? Is there one? Or is the Tannehill-type of quarterback destined to fail in the NFL without a rock-solid team around him?

Ive been a thill supporter since day 1 and still am. However, i really feel like he's a glorified Alex Smith. Needs a good run game and strong defense to keep the team in games. Those still hoping he turns out to be the next Aaron Rodgers are going to be disappointed.

Truth hurts, but so does dreaming a dream that will never come true.

Hmmmm......if you thought he was going to be the next Aaron Rodgers, the issue is with your expectations, not RT. Every QB benefits from a good run game and every QB benefits from a strong defense.....what I want from our QB is continued improvement, which I have gotten his first 3 years. We still have 8 games to go this season and will judge him when we are done for the year.....but there are significantly worse problems to worry about than the QB position currently.

OP - I would put him in some additional gunslinger modes and let him make plays with his arm and legs. RT has proven to be very good outside of the pocket and throwing on the run. Why not use that more?

Tier 3 starter. Won't make it to the pro bowl, but you can win a championship with him with the right supporting cast.

Tier 1's and Tier 2's slit defenses throats for a living.

Tier 1:
Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger, Drew Brees, Phillip Rivers

Tier 2:
Tony Romo, Eli Manning, Andrew Luck, Matt Ryan, Cam Newton, Carson Palmer, Russell Wilson, Derek Carr

Where player X is on either Tier 1 or 2 is not important. It's a random order.

The difference between Tier 1/2's and Tier 3's is THEY WIN games for you. Tier 3's don't win games for you, but they don't lose them like a tier 4 or 5 will.

Ryan Tannehill is tier 3.

Ryan Tannehill is tier 3.

He's not winning a championship.

Tannehill is made by the team around him...he does not make the team...so, unless you get some better protection, LB's, and CB's...and safety...we are screwed. He really isn't even a "game manager"...a "game manager" doesn't do the stupid things he does.

He's not winning a championship.

Not likely. He doesn't increase his teams chances. He could win one with the right players around him though.

As far upgrades..

Jared Goff will be a tier 2/3 guy
Paxton Lynch will be a tier 2/3 guy
Connor Cook is tier 3

The risk isn't worth the reward. Stick with Tannehill, invest in blockers and tacklers

We've been doing that for 4 years. Tannehill is Jay Fiedler part 2. A mediocre game manager that will never win anything and probably will never even sniff the playoffs.

I don't get how a person on this site as either a Miami QB hater or defender would not go ape **** over seeing Phillip I haven't won a thing in my life and am now 2-6 as a Tier 1 QB. It defies Finheaven logic to the fullest.

Peyton Manning needs a good defense to keep his 9 TD/13 INT stat-line relevant to the 7-1 Broncos. Cam Newton has 1 more TD and the same amount of INTs as Tannehill does yet his defense is good and their running game is decent for the 8-0 Panthers.

If the defense could stop anyone Miami would have a chance. If the offense could score more than 14 in a game they'd also have a chance.

Yes, asking Ryan to take risks and go into gunslinger mode is bound to result in more turnovers. However, I also think Ryan is the kind of QB that will throw picks, but also make plays. In fact, he threw two very unfortunate interceptions against Tennessee and yet he still was able to make plays when we needed them, like the deep ball to Stills or the TD pass to Jordan.

I think the problem with our offense is that, when our running game isn't working and we go into full passing mode, we become one-dimensional. And that's not a recipe for success, especially since we have a very inefficient pass-blocking OL that can't contain the constant pressure brought by the defense. When all you do is pass and the defense knows it, bad things will happen.

That's why we need balance. That's why we need a running game. We can't ask Ryan to throw for 40+ times a game because if we're asking him to do that, it's probably cause our running game isn't working and that means our offense has become completely predictable. Add to that the fact that our OC doesn't believe in threatening the middle of the field, and you have a very limited offense.

I mean no offense by this....but I have read this twice and have no idea what you are saying?

Ryan Tannehill is tier 3.

How do you explain the multiple losing seasons among some of the tier 2 QBs? Tony Romo, Eli Manning, Matt Ryan, Cam Newton, and Carson Palmer have all had multiple 8-8 or worse seasons.

What I got from that is what I've been wondering myself. Rivers is on pace to break records, but is 2-6. By most people's standards they should be undefeated bc he is elevating the play around him and overcoming all the other problems.
Same with NO, and by contrast Peyton Manning is garbage this season yet they are 7-1. Certainly doesn't match up with all the negative drivel about RT's production.
Too many people overlook the team as a whole and most importantly, the coaching and play calling.
