Yes, there is a buzz building around Cam Thomas, and not just on this blog thanks to our friends from New Jersey.
The defensive tackle from North Carolina has been a monster out here in Senior Bowl practice this week and could be a nice consolation prize for the Miami Dolphins in the middle rounds as they seek a long-term solution at nose tackle.

Can Thomas play the nose in the NFL?

"Yeah, straight nose," Thomas told me this week. "Let's go, baby."

What would he bring in that role?

"Power," he said. "A guy that can anchor. That's what they want. That's what the nose is, an anchor guy, and that's what I would bring."

Thomas officially measured at 6-3 and 331 pounds.

"That's what they had me at," he said. "But I think I'm 6-4."

His hands are "10 [inches] and some change," he says, and he plays the game with an obvious enthusiasm. Even in blocking drills, Thomas will emit a primal scream as he blows by interior linemen.

Talking to Thomas, I couldn't help but think back to a young Jason Ferguson, whom I covered when he played at Georgia and I was working in Augusta. Maybe it's the No. 95 Thomas is wearing out here this week. Maybe it's the quick wit and the outgoing personality. Maybe it's the quickness off the ball and the ability to make plays on the nose.

Good player, overshadowed a bit by his teammate Marvin Austin, but an excellent player in his own right.

You probably already knew this:
[FONT=Verdana,Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif]Austin, Carter, Sturdivant, Williams & Burney to all return: North Carolina junior defensive back Deunta Williams said Sunday that he and four other defensive underclass teammates who all could have entered the NFL draft have collectively decided to return. I like this guy so much better than Ron Brace as a prospect it isn't funny. I just hated Brace for a lot of reasons and talked about it before the draft last year.

Cam Thomas definitely looks like the part, definitely looks like more of an NFL caliber player. and he may be had at a later pick than Brace was selected last year.

Anything earlier than the 3rd round I think is a reach for this guy.

Cam's the man... NFL Network had is official height as 6' 4" 1/4 which kind of surprised me... he's just got something about him!!! perhaps a late bloomer and a gem to unearth!!!

Jason Ferguson had a great interview late in the year talking about how not many people "want" to play NT in a 3-4. He talked about how it's such an non glorious position, and if you want to be good at that position, loving the constant double teams has to be something a player loves to go up against.

And love it on a constant basis, because for a lot of players it gets old quick. He said that's what separates the great NT's and the not-so great ones.

And Cam Thomas seems to relish that role. He seems to enjoy it, welcomes it.

I like this guy from what I've seen from him on the field lately. He is very good at the nose and seems to have a good grasp of the position by watching him move so well in there, and understands what it takes.

I think Jason Ferguson would be the perfect mentor for him. If he retires then as an assistant D-line coach to coach Cam Thomas (and Soliai). I think it would be wise for Parcells to hire Ferguson as an assistant d-line coach. He is very tight with Ferguson, and Sparano raved what a great mentor/teacher Ferguson was for Soliai.

I like Ferguson's "no nonsense" approach. Soliai looked totally hopeless not too long ago, and we got some glimpses of ability (and drive) from him under Ferguson's watch.

Soliai himself said how vital Ferguson has been for him in his development. Glowing about how smart Ferguson is, Even mentioning how he views him as a brother. So if Ferguson can snatch that out of a guy like Soliai who didn't seem to even care, what will Ferguson do for a young guy who already has the mental aspect down and is a real player ?

Sky is the limit I would say.

You guys think he can be a starting NT? If so that means the Dolphins can pass on Dan Williams and Mt Cody and make a play for this guy later.

I would like Cam in the 4th, although I'm not completely sure where his stock rests right now.

Here's Mayock talking about Cam Thomas during practice the other day. Starting at 7:55.

And then at 8:44 Corey Chavous starts talking about what Michael Dean Perry told him about Cam Thomas. Perry worked with Thomas.. And he was saying that Thomas is quicker than he looks, and they were surprised with his quickness during practices. Even mentioning he can play some 3-4 DE. So he is versatile.

Well, i'm on the Cam Thomas bandwagon! haha

Im going to look more into him, but the fact he can play some 3-4 end too would seem to boost his chances of ending up in Miami.

I believe that CAM has probably moved up to the early third and maybe into the bottom of the second with his week at the Sr Bowl. There will be a lot of teams looking for development NT/DT types at the bottom of the second rd and into the third. PIT, SD, DAL, MINN, NYJ are all looking for a young DT/NT and so at the bottom of rd 2 it is not out of the question that he could be the target of all of those teams. He appears to have moved ahead of Troup, Ross etc. so he could very well be the third NT type off the Board.

I remember watching a NC game and thought Thomas was pretty good. He was getting very good push and had to be double teamed. He commanded attention. I don't remember who they were playing against, but I was impressed enough to remember him.
