If you think the Brandon Albert's situation with Miami is tough then take a look at the Mike Pouncy's situation. Atleast, the Dolphins have a BA's replacement waiting in the wings, The major concern with MP is his hip injuries that is degenerative leading to a shortened career. In short, MP will never be the same again. No amount of correction can make an offensive lineman hips better or the same prior to getting injured. Nobody in football uses his hips more than the offensive lineman. For this reason along with Pouncey's hefty salary cap numbers, I propose moving on from Pouncey. Nobody says this would be easy.

Here are his numbers:

Contract: 5yrs/$44.75 million in 2015
•He has a cap hit of just about 9m per year for the remainder of his contract (2020)
•Dead cap of $5m in 2017 and $3m post-June 1st with $2m(2018), $1m(2019), and $0 in 2020.

Here is the toughest part of the situation:

As you can see, Miami doesn't save a ton of money by releasing MP in 2017 and the cap hit is stupendous, not only that, we don't have a viable option and more importantly not enough draft picks to fill all the holes on the roster.

You see folks, I don't know if MP counts as an injury-prone player but you must admit he missed tons of games, won't be same again and basically not worth the amount of money he's getting paid.

Missed games: 2 (2013), 4 (2014), 2 (2015), 13 (2016)

Although MP may decide to retire (he briefly contemplated retirement). If he doesn't the Dolphins will have these options:

1.Keep him and his $9m cap hit in 2017. If so, do they keep him at C or move him to G. ( I didn't like the experiment last time)

2.Trade him, ( any takers ?)

3.Release him save about $4m but $5 mill cap hit makes it hard.

4. depleted draft picks make it even harder to replace him.

Tough and Unfortunate, isn't it ?

Yeah. I don't really think this is even on the table though. He's on the team in 2017 no matter what. We can re-examine after the season to see how he does and how many games he plays. Albert on the other hand...

Keep him and be thankful for whatever you get from him next year. To cut him to save 4-5 million would be asinine at this juncture.

The only people talking about getting rid of him are uneducated fans.

The team isn't and never has had that thought.

Mike Pouncey has stated that the hip injury is not degenerative and until someone leaks an MRI report demonstrating that it its, then I will take Pouncey's and the team's word.
I reject the premise of this thread as it is based purely on conjecture.

Elflein or Pocic would make a lot of sense in the 2nd. Both can play OG or C. So, Miami would add a starter to the interior, while also adding starting-caliber depth at the C position. I don't think Elflein is there in the 2nd, but Pocic may be.

Lamp, Feeney, and D. Johnson are also considerations in the 2nd. Johnson may be able to play some OT, as well. I have late-1st/2nd RD grades on each of these players - with the exception of Pocic, who I have as a 2nd RD player. Very good athlete, but he struggles a little with staying low, and when he doesn't, he looks mediocre.

This is how you solve the problem. Not by cutting Pouncey.

problem is...cohesiveness of the line. You have to get a starting center ready cause by game 3 he'll be out and we'll be plugging a hole on the most important part of our weakness on O. If we keep him just have a strong alternative plan ready to rock cause we will no doubt need him...unfortunately. Btw, nobody would trade for him for anything more than a very late draft pick at best.

Some people seem pretty high on Johnson but I like Lamp and Feeney better. There's a chance one of them may drop to #54 but maybe not since there are a lot of teams looking for interior O-line help. Denver, Cleveland, Houston, Minnesota, Philadelphia and Carolina should all be looking for O-line help in this draft...along with us. Johnson would have made a real nice fit into Denver's ZBS but now that Kubiak is gone who knows what they'll be running.

Dolphins have interest in Pocic.

As for Pouncey he's not going anywhere. My gut says he'll play half a dozen games next year, hurt his hip again, be done for the season and retire because of chronic hip issues.

pocics height is a concern...he is very tall have to worry about leverage and anchor battles there on the pivot...I'm a little leary of that...lamp or feeney could play it and provide guard play although I really think lamp might make a better pivot with those arms

neither will get to 54

we need to get more athletic on the pivot cause the depth space play is frankly very bad

doesn't matter if it's steen or urbik we aren't getting to things at the 2nd level and in space that we need to in order for our run game to hum especially when we don't have thumper tackles on the edge or really thumper guards for that matter

This offense just seems to go with Mike Pouncey in the lineup. The numbers back it up. The injuries are unfortunate and have a huge impact. While we were so much improved in 2016 compared to depth and starters in 2015 and prior, we still need to upgrade certain spots. Steen and Urbik (our backups) were better than the starters who Gase fired. Steen seems to still be improving and he is young so we could see more growth there.

We definitely need to add a player who can play center better than Steen or Urbik and one who can get to the second level as Hoops mentioned. I think if we could find a player who could potentially compete for a starting spot at RG and do what I just mentioned (play center), would be ideal.

Looking at some FA's....Ryan Groy in Buffalo played pretty well as a replacement center as did JC Tretter in Green Bay. AQ Shipley is another but he is a bit older at 31.

Imagine the day when we can actually keep our starting o-line on the field for a full season...or maybe just a few missed games total. We need another year like 2008 when we stayed VERY healthy as a team.
