Giants signed DL Chris Canty to a six-year, $42 million contract. The deal includes $17.25 million in guarantees.
An already loaded defensive line gets better, and a lot bigger. Canty gives New York the option of showing more 3-4 looks to disguise blitzes. The Giants may also ask him to bulk up and play tackle at a John Henderson-like position. At 6'7/304, he can likely afford to carry more weight. Canty isn't a dominant rusher, but commands attention and can bat down passes with his long arms. The Giants will keep their linemen fresh in a heavy rotation.
That signing goes with....
Giants agreed to terms with DT Rocky Bernard on a four-year, $16 million contract.
Bernard, 30, is a pocket pusher whose play has declined since a nine-sack 2005 season, but he should be effective in a "wave" role behind starters Fred Robbins and Barry Cofield. He won't be a three-down player. Bernard showed he can still produce by posting a career-best 55 tackles in 2008.
And also....
Giants signed LB Michael Boley to a five-year, $25 million contract with $11 million guaranteed.
Boley, a Pro Bowl caliber linebacker, is a terrific addition at a reasonable cost. He lost some luster after getting benched late last season, but Mike Smith's defense was an awful fit for the strong-side linebacker. If the Giants can also reel in Chris Canty, they may overtake the Steelers and Ravens for best defense in the game.
Talk about making an already great defense deeper and more potent then ever.
This is a team that might have lost the best WR and instead of getting a TJ they just keep plugging into their defense. I always laughed when guys here would say we won't draft or sign other DE's because we have enough already, apparently one of the best D-Lines feels the need to load up some more maybe we should too.
I love what their doing in NYG's land, BP and JI are sure to be thinking the same thing here. I'm willing to bet that our draft will be 4 to 5 guys picked for the trenches and the rest in LB's and CB's.
