I believe that this report is merely a bluff by Saban. He did it to make the Jets sweat about trying to move down and take Cutler. Now the Jets must fear that if they move down, that the Phins will move up in front of them and take Cutler. Of course we won't because we all know how much Saban values his picks. There is also another reason for such a bluff and that is to not allow the Jets to get stronger with the accumulation of multiple picks. If we were allow the Jets to think that they could move down and still nab say, Cutler and acquire the picks in the meantime, they may do that. But now they will be way more cautious in sliding down the board in order to make sure they get the player they really want.

good thought.. because if they jets wanna draft cutler i wanna make sure they draft him at #4 spot... because i believe the only other real threat will be the lions at pick #9 ... so the jets probably thought they could slide down to 7 or 8 and still get their man.. i for one want cutler.. but i know we wont get him at 16 anymore... so i dont want to trade up to get him.. i rather look for other possibilities...

i think your putting too much into this. I would tell a soul and move past the jets and take him. i wouldn't tip my hand. Its fun to speculate though.

I think its just barry jackson trying to get lucky with a speculation... What source of information could he possibly have with Saban running the show...

I follow your logic and agree that it is a possibility, however, opinions and theories do not qualify as "TRUTH", your title was misleaading.

It just may be a bluff. We would have to sell the farm to move up far enough.
I can't see Saban giving up a lot of picks.

I dont really agree with this usage of the phrase "selling the farm". We have no idea how much it would cost, and into what slot we would need to move to get Cutler. For example, we definitely don't need to move into the four slot to get him. What about if Saban deemed that it was possible to get him at the 10 slot after the first 8 teams select, and we ship our #16, Ricky williams, and a 2007 4th round to the cardinals, who are said to be enamored with Lendale White. Now Denny Green gets his RB, a selection of decent position in the first round and a 4th next year. Hardly selling the farm. Who knows if this would be enough, but theres talk of ricky bringing back a conditional 1st from some sources. And for a guy who wont be a starter on our team and 1 year removed from sitting out a year as well as 1 infraction from being suspended another, Id take it. Granted this would put major pressure on Cutler to be "the one", but heck he would have anyway.

I think this and more is the reason. We also get to find out the value of other things like RICKY W. and so forth. I think if we were really trading up he would not announce it so forthright.

The flaw in this, as I see it, is that the Jest also know that Saban doesn't like to trade up and lose picks. The other flaw is that the Jest might be ok at QB if Chad can make it and he's signed to a big contract. They know that Miami has squat at QB and no one under contract...right now...I know that it's theory time now but I don't buy this one...

BTW, you should be careful about your thread titles...reading it sounds like you have a link or something to corroborate your idea....

The Jets supposedly were looking into trading down before Cutler became such a hot item, so I don't think there's anything to this. They could trade down and fill any number of offensive holes just as well.

Well, we absolutely have to really wait and see how the draft shakes out, we all know it gets crazy sometimes, but where do you get the idea that we don't need to move to #4 to get Cutler ?? After his Senior bowl, most guys have him moving up definitely into the top 7-8 and perhaps even over Young and Leinart ?? We don't have clue as to the value of the top guys just yet, and may not until the day after the draft, but its dumb to assume that he'll get past the Jests purely due to the Chad issue....

There's a catch-20 here. If we don't have to sell the farm for him, that means that his combine was suspect. I wrote before, that to trade up (via draft picks alone) to the #5 spot would take us giving up our 2006 1 & 2, along with next years cond. #2. To aquire the 10 spot, the equivilient of our #3,4, & 5 of this year, would need to be given for someone whose stock was dropping. We shouldn't be looking into trading Ricky either. After all, how many capable starters are there that don't care how much they make. [ the answer is 1, Ricky. ] We are not as desperate as most people think when dealing with our QBs. A FA as well as a late 2nd day pick for practice squad purposes should do just fine.

Do you think maybe, we should work on making our defense top notch, our O-line top notch...then once we have everything, THEN we draft a top QB. I mean we already have a defense getting young and better, and an O-line getting young and better with receivers, and runningbacks. Lets work on our overall team, THEN go for the Franchise QB. In a year or two, Louisville QB Brian Brohm will come out of the draft....and he so far, he looks really promising to be a good NFL QB. we can just use veterans now, Frerrote is decent...we can try out Kitna and Volek, or go for someone like Matt Schaub.

i still would rather have Whitehurst in the 2nd-3rd round and use the 1st pick on a LT and the 2nd or 3rd on a Linebacker or Corner.
