It was an eventful session in steamy Davie, FL. this morning.

If you've been wondering how the Dolphins are going to attack the quarterback on obvious passing downs, the preliminary answer is that their first-team front on the nickel and dime package consists of Joey Porter and Jason Taylor on the edges, and Phillip Merling and Randy Starks up the middle. Interesting that Kendall Langford, who actually had one more sack than Merling last season, is not in that mix as of now.

The back end of the nickel packages consist of Will Allen, Yeremiah Bell, Gibril Wilson, Tryone Culver, Eric Green and Nathan Jones on first team. The back end on second team consists of Rookies Vontae Davis and Sean Smith, Jason Allen, Chris Clemons, Courtney Bryan and Ethan Kilmer.

The Dolphins will work on a lot of nickel situations in the comig days so if there's going to be some shakeup in that lineup, it may come after those days.

At work during team drills, Porter had a sack while Lionel Dotson and Quentin Moses combined for a sack. Will Allen continues to excel as he had another interception of a Chad Pennington sideline pass.

Brian Hartline had a drop during team drills while Greg Camarillo (old faithful) continues to make himself available for Pennington whenever the QB is in trouble. If Pennington is out of the pocket, he's looking for Camarillo. I would not be surprised -- and neither should you -- if after all the talk of Ted Ginn and Patrick Turner this offseason, it is Camarillo that leads the team in receptions.

Ginn did have a productive practice today. He beat Culver on a post pattern for a 30-yard TD in the back of the end zone. He also was open deep along the sideline once but a Pennington pass got held up in the air, allowing the defender to recover and knock it away

Miami Dolphins’ Day 3 morning practice report
by Edgar Thompson
The Dolphins focused on the passing game and seemed to be getting their timing a little more after some fairly ragged practices by the offense during first couple of days of camp.

A pair of Ohio State alums made the catches of the day, beginning with a finger-tip grab by Ted Ginn Jr. in the back of the end on a pass from Chad Pennington. Back-up safety Tyrone Culver was in coverage.

Not to be outdone, WR Brian Hartline made a leaping catch over 6-foot-3 rookie corner Sean Smith along the sideline on a throw from Pennington. Hartline wrestled the ball away from his fellow rookie.

Here’s some more quick hits from this morning’s session:

- LB Matt Roth was not at practice and remains on the non-football illness list.

Tony Sparano will address the latest with Roth during his 12:30 p.m. press conference.

- Starting LG Justin Smiley was back at practice after he was excused Monday for the birth of his son, Jett.

The line seemed to get better push on the left side in the run game with Smiley back.

- CB Eric Green continues to line up on the right side with the first unit.

Starter Will Allen, who signed an extension in May, had another good day. He pounced on an out pattern from Pennington to Anthony Armstrong to come up with his second pick in training camp.

- LB Jason Taylor worked on the right side a bit, but Joey Porter manned the weak side most of the time.

Tony Sparano said coaches plan to play JT on the strong side.

- Vontae Davis’ closing speed seems to give him an edge over fellow Smith right now.

Smith made more plays in mini-camps and had a strong Monday evening practice, but Davis gets to the ball more quickly.

Near the end of practice, Smith was a fraction late for an out pattern from Pat White to Ted Ginn, who made a diving catch and came up with the ball. Smith pounded his hand on the ground in frustration at the end of the play.

Making up for things a little later, Smith stuck with the play and wrestled the ball away from Hartine on an out from Pennington.

But Davis will have to learn the tricks of the trade. Greg Camarillo had a few yards caught an out pattern on him from Pennington, highlighting the advantage of Camarillo’s route-running over Davis’ quickness.

To make sure Davis keeps on his toes, running back Ricky Williams seemed to give Davis a little extra pop on a block.

- London made a few nice catches, including a deep out along the sideline in traffic, with Green in coverage.

- Second-year pro Lionel Dotson had a strong day at nose tackle.

A seventh-round pick in 2008, Dotson got excellent push a number of times and sacked Henne when Dotson blew by Ike Ndukwe.

Paul Soliai worked some with the starters and looks much quicker this season.

- In 7-on-7 passing drills, Pennington missed first two throws pretty badly, but hit next three including perfect throws on sideline hook-up with Hartline and an out pattern to London between two defenders.

Henne followed going 2-of-4, while White was 2-of-3, making one of his most comfortable looking throws on camp on a 12-yard in to Hartline, who’s having a solid camp.

- In the first go-around of 11-on-11, Pennnington was 2-of-4 and suffered a sack by Joey Porter, with a huge assist from the secondary.

Henne completed both passes, with sack by Dotson mixed in. White was 1-of-2, thanks to Ginn’s diving catch on the sideline vs. Smith, and suffered a coverage sack.

- The second time, Pennington was 1-of-3, with the interception to Allen, a completion to Camarillo (but after the clock sounded) and an incompletion to Hartline when Smith stripped the ball away.

With a chance to make an impression after a shaky series by Pennington, Henne was 2-of-3, but suffered two sacks by Quentin Moses, with Dotson nearby, and linebacker Erik Walden.

White went 2-of-3, but one was a screen pass to Davone Bess, while London made a diving catch on White’s other completion, with Davis closing in.

Add it up and Pennington was 3-of-7, with a pick, Henne was 4-of-5, but was sacked three times, and White was 2-of-5.

There you go … will be back to update you in a bit on what Sparano has to say.

Davone Bess is working as the slot receiver with the first team.
Lionel Dotson sacked Henne after Cameron Wake's pressure forced him to step up. Wake getting close to would be sack, but hasn't gotten one.
Joey Porter registered first sack during team drills, getting to Penny. Oline struggled today handling pressure.
Will Allen picked off Penny pass intended for Anthony Armstrong and might have run it back for touchdown.
Quentin Moses got to Henne when pocket collapsed, pushing FB chris Brown into him. Erik Walden beat Garner for a sack a few plays later.
Pat White is still having troubles with his accuracy. He's still throwing high and behind guys. The rook needs time.
I love the fact Patrick Turner and Brandon London are on the same unit together. Allows an ideal comparison of two similar guys.
Still no sign of Dolphins part owner JLo. I can't believe she hasn't come to check out her new team.
I'll admit Patrick Turner is a real smooth route runner, but I'm still waiting for him to make a WOW catch to back up all the hype he has.
Ricky Williams' calfs look like my thighs. HUGE. Like usual he's running hard every drill. No surprise.
Donald Thomas continues to work, but isn't participating in contact drills.
Shawn Murphy is beginning his fourth practice as the starting right guard for the Phins.
Justin Smiley is back at practice and resumed working with starters as the LG.
WR Brennan Marion, who is recovering from an ACL injury, is not practicing this morning. Like can't handle two-a-days.

Matt Roth is a no-show for the morning session.

And it's official. Armando Salguero does not know what a nickel package is. Otherwise he'd have noticed that he listed 6 DBs as first team in the team's "nickel" package.

Quentin Moses huh? Now there's a guy we didn't think we'd be hearing too much about in the OLB race...

O.K....so thats a nickle with a penny thrown in for good luck!!

Nice to read that Hartline and Wake seem to be doing well. I know wake hasnt gotten a sack but he is close and maybe just that one play shows he can get pressure in the NFL. Cant wait to read more.

Dotons playing the nose, and sounds like doing it well...I like it!

Im interested in watching what Solai does. Hope he really does bring it on this year.

Seems lots of people are getting sacks the last couple of days off of Cam Wakes pressures.

Interesting that Kendall Langford, who actually had one more sack than Merling last season, is not in that mix as of now.

Did he not notice that Langford also played a lot more (because of his strength against the run) than Merling? It's not difficult to understand - unless you're an Armando.

Ok, so Armando needs to brush up on his nickel and dime terminology and Edgar needs to brush up on his math a bit. Edgar says that Pat White was 2 of 5 in the 11-on-11 but he first says he was 1 of 2, and then says he was 2 of 3, and last I checked that adds up to 3 of 5.

LOL, c'mon guys - these guys bang these reports out as fast as they can so we can get instant gratification and read the stuff almost as it happens. Cut 'em a bit of slack. Just a bit. Not Armando though.
