He was the best all around running back through the first 7 games of the 2007 season. He was destroying the league and was well on his way to not only going to the Pro Bowl, but being the starting back in the Pro Bowl.
Of course though, the injury he suffered will hinder his ability, and whether or not he can return to that form is the big question. It was a clean tear with no cartilage damage, so there is a chance he could be the same Ronnie as before.
I don't think he is the "Best" pure running back in the league. A lot of names come to mind that top him, but I do consider him a top 5 in the conversation for the "Best" as an all-purpose running back.
With what we are paying Ronnie, and probably an 85% chance he returns as himself, there is no real reason to draft McFadden. With a back like Ronnie still under contract for another three seasons, and you include Ricky and Booker, adding a running back in the mid rounds(between rounds 3 and 6), is all we really need to do.
If you draft McFadden, do you really want to have spent around $52-55 million in guaranteed money on rookie running backs in the past four years?
Parcells is known for not drafting running backs high, so if you are hoping for McFadden come 3:10PM on draft day, you will be disappointed with the result.
