I was reading Peter King's MMQB today, and came across this:

"
The Colts' loss to San Diego ended at 4:21 p.m. EST. By 6:07, quotes from seven 1972 Dolphins players, plus coach Don Shula, were in my e-mail, from the Miami PR staff. Efficient, to be sure. But does that team have to be so publicly joyful EVERY time the last unbeaten team loses a game, keeping the legacy of the only unbeaten NFL team ever intact?"

So I sent this letter in, I doubt it'll be in the MMQB Tuesday addition, but you never know.

I read your column every week, its one of my favorites, however, I take exception to the vilification of the '72 Dolphins. The argument states that they celebrate other people's misfortunes, with a champagne toast when the last undefeated team falls. How is this really different then a fan celebrating a win of one team over another. In a win, there was one team who was unfortunate. Is the fan celebrating the losing team’s failure? Is that a lack of class? What if the fan, actually had something to lose, like a wager or even bragging rights? Those Dolphins achieved something no other has, if someone else does it they'll congratulate them, but if no one else accomplishes it, then they should cherish it. In this age of Terrell Owens and his ilk, when you yourself look to teams like the Patriots as the embodiment of team accomplishment, why is it so wrong for a team to celebrate the ultimate team accomplishment? They aren’t out there celebrating individual achievements. Thank you.

Very nice response my friend, well done!

the thing that gets lost up in the 72 team... is that they had to go INTO Pitt and beat the steel curtain on the road.

Thanks! I'm so tired of the media with this issue. They are the ones that put Don, Bob, & Nick on camera, then turn around and blast them for celebrating it publicly.

I'd cut the last line and call it great.
:)

To paraphrase the old Smith Barney commercial and relating it to the '72 Dolphins place in NFL history: "They've earned it."

Very Nice!!

Yeah,I'm getting real sick of the media bashing that team.

As I said in the other thread: The media can kiss their old, grizzled, and hairy butts!!

Same here! The 72 team has NEVER been given their DUE.

Amen. Hell yes they are enjoying it. The media gets mad ebcause all their "darling" teams can't duplicate it.

Well written, well stated.

Interestingly, Snopes.com has just posted an entry calling the champagne celbration an urban legend:

http://www.snopes.com/sports/football/miami72.asp

I, therefore, sent Peter this reply:

Could we once and for all put to rest the urban legend that all the surviving members of the 1972 Dolphins pop a cork when the last undefeated team goes down each year? It just doesn't happen that way, and the media's portrayal of the squad as bitter, petty, old men has been particularly hurtful this year.

Heck, even Snopes.com has posted an entry labeling this bit of lore an urban legend:

http://www.snopes.com/sports/football/miami72.asp.

Thanks.

Nice comments.

No doubt they will fall on deaf ears though.
High levels of success breeds resentment.
That's just a fact of life.

The only people that will enjoy the memory of the 72 Phins are Phin fans. Some of those are even villifying that team sadly. :shakeno:

nice reply - if you would have somehow thrown in a line sucking up to Brady, it would have made it in tomorrows column for sure....
