Tight Ends are no longer a luxury in the NFL, they have become a critical dimension to the passing game.We are seeing that offensive success is directly correlated to the way in which teams implement their tight ends.

Seam routes have never been so effective and the entire red zone offense has changed dramatically with the evolution of the position.

The top two passing offenses this past season, the Saints and Broncos benefitedgreaty from having tremendous tight end play. Julius Thomas and Jimmy Graham, respectively, caught 12 and 16 touchdowns this season, showing how valuable the position can be as both teams went on into the playoffs.

On the other hand, the five teams with the lowest passing touchdown totals were the Jets, Jaguars, Bills, Raiders and Giants. These teams had almost no support from their tight ends, and none of these teams made the playoffs.

The 6-foot-5 Thomas and 6-7 Graham both played college basketball and showcased their rebounding abilities as they constantly muscled opposing defenders on jump balls. This trend of transitioning college basketball players into NFL tight ends has become more prevalent after the success of Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates. Gates, one of the leagues most consistent tight ends over the last decade wasn’t even drafted because he didn’t player college football but he has shown a seamless transition into the NFL with his natural ability to catch in traffic.

That been said, please allow me to introduce to yous my " man-crush" and my next weapon I want our beloved Dolphins to add to their offense. Austin Seferian-Jenkins from Washington.

His basketball experience puts him in the company of esteemed tight ends such as Tony Gonzalez, Antonio Gates and Jimmy Graham, and it is very evident in his playing style, as he frequently jumps high up in the air to make difficult catches

I can compare him to Gronk or Graham, but for me, he most resembles Atlanta's future Hall-of-Famer, Tony Gonzalez, why ? There isn't an NFL defender who can size up with Austin Seferian-Jenkins in coverage, and it will take a couple of guys to get to the QB when he's blocking.

I think Miami shoud make every effort to draft this guy for many reasons

1- It has been over 40yrs that miami since drafted a TE in the first round, and I believe the last one Jim Mandich was an hall of famer.
2- ASJ couple with our new "weapon" running back will create havoc for NFL defenses and most importantly
3- Isn't it time Miami join the "arms race".

I don't know about you but am tired of teams with great TE's doing things to us. New orleans game of 2013 comes to mind.

Wow 40 years without drafting a TE in round 1 is absolutely ridiculous especially the way they are used in offenses. Doubt we do it this year though. As much as I would love a threat like your guy or mine (Ebron), we have too big of an OL need and adequate play at TE now.

Be surprised if he goes in the top 50...would take snaps from dion sims who they want to develop...seriously doubt it...not the seam threat and mismatch that Gonzalez and gates have been or graham is...

Can get down the seam but will primarily work the intermediate and underneath and make hay in the red zone...good player just not the need if they think sims is the in line guy for the future...more pass catching talent than sims and polish though...

this guys role is that of dion sims for us...if they do draft him sims is in trouble...

Having a great TE is not the "end all be all" of football. Just go ask the Falcons how important it is to have a great, or even the greatest of all time, TE...

Also, he will be gone by the time we pick in the 2nd...

The Dolphins never seem to value tight ends. The Pats, Saints and Broncos put up huge points and create huge mismatches with their TE's, but the Phins always decide to go with average to crappy TE's every year. :rolleyes2: I wouldn't take a TE in round one unless Ebron were to drop to us, but Jenkins would be a nice pickup. He likely will be gone by round two, so I think we will likely look at taking an O-lineman first and then maybe the BPA in round two.

To make your point you use two teams with the two of the best QB's in the league and four teams with some the worst QB play. I don't think TE's had as much to do with the success of their teams as their QB's did. In other words put those TE's from the top two offenses to the bottom four teams you selected and their win totals won't change.

TE is important but let's not make it the be-all end-all. NE still went tho the AFC championship game with no Gronk or Hernandez why? T.Brady. Seattle won the championship with ?????.......Z. Miller and his less than 400yards of offense.

Fix the oline, get a run game, play solid defense and grow a QB!

Agreed, dump Egnew....I'd love to take the big tight end...but damn...we need the line shored up....OT Zack Martin is my choice.

We don't draft WR's in the early rounds let alone a TE. When it comes to drafting we just do the same ol song and dance every year. LB's, OL, and DB's. Year in and year out. I don't think we have had a Front Office or HC since Shula that cared about the scoreboard (putting points on the scoreboard) and offensive weapons.

We drafted Tanny, Ted Ginn and Ronnie Brown in the first round.:ponder:
