This Dolphin organization for a change has it correct. If you have played or coached most sports there is no substitute for speed.

Yea cause we were so slow before with 4.4 receivers and runningbacks.

He was probably refering to all our offensive positions. Marty and Wes did not run 4.4s and I think the guys on the OL with be faster and quicker than the players they replaced (excluding the RT position).

The key factor with speed is, that barring injury, it never goes into a slump. Guys will have good days and bad days, but speed is consistant. And it demands respect every play. It's a good thing to have.

I agree that speed is an important aspect to the game, but speed alone does not equal success. Marino didn't have speed, but his intelligence and quick release were pretty good substitutes. Jerry Rice didn't have speed, but his drive and work ethic were pretty good substitutes. Zach Thomas doesn't have speed, but his toughness and determination are pretty good substitutes.

Although a couple individual players with great speed is an incredible asset, i believe overall team speed is what we need to achieve. (ex. Cowboys D in the mid 90's, Bucs D in 00-02)

Oh so i guess n hope that ur right, with Ginn we have no more problems b-cause we got the speed.

That would be who?? Wes? Booker? McMike? RB? Hagan? Morris?

Our return game has been a joke for a few years. We have had no speed there. We have not had a game breaking speedster in years.

Actually I believe there is raw speed and there is quickness. Zach has quickness which is helped by his preparation. He anticipates well because he prepares himslef well.
Jerry Rice had SPEED! Where did you get he didn't. He could run away from any DB in his prime. Speed at RB and WR is critical because the defense has to account for it on every play. I nthe past defenses could line 8 in the box against Miami. Now you put Ginn outisde and Booker spreads out what does the D do? You now have a home run threat if the D guesses wrong. We haven't had that in a LONG time!

Rice was slow in 40 times compared to other premier WRs. He ran 4.6s coming out of college. In a game though, with his precise routes and cutting and accelerating ability, few could catch him. Also, Rice's insane conditioning allowed him to be far fresher later in games than the opposing DBs. Corners that could easily outrun Rice at the beginning of games were left in his dust by the 4th qtr.

So no, Jerry Rice did not have much straight line speed. His other skills more than made up for that though.
