Because with all the Wanny discussions (which I joined in today) no one really directs criticism toward Jimmy. Being equal opportunity here, Jimmy does not come out of this squeaky clean. I understand the desire to promote a "family" guy, but Jimmy had to know the weaknesses Wanny brought to the table. I do not let him off the hook. And his drafts, which were strong with Dallas, were not very consistent with Miami. More success in the second, third, and fifth rounds than in any other part of the draft, but still inconsistent.
Jimmy was a better leader as a coach, but his imput in the team through the hiring of Wanny was a huge negative legacy he left to the team. I am generally a logic minded person, but this response today on Jimmy and Wanny previously is more emotionally charged, and could be easily debated by level headed thinkers.

I've always said he was the beginning of the end for us! AT first I loved him, but he killed our offense!

I was never a big fan of Jimmy. He seems to greasy for my taste. Too self centered and someone you know you can't trust.

The jimmy/dan dynamic is what bothered me the most.. You dont do those things to the best qb ever to play the game. dan still had something left, jimmy wasted it. jimmy's biggest drafting mistake was not being able to find a running back and wasting picks on junk recievers. he built a defense. thats about it. little disappointing considering the hype and excitement he came here with..

Yup, he handled the Marino situation horrible too.

After what happened to Yatil Green with his injury...Jimmy let that influence him in the next draft when he could have taken Moss...But instead he took Avery...That was when the honeymoon was over for me....I knew that was idiotic the moment it happened. Danny boy and Randy could have done some very nice things on the field together.

Jimmy had a small role in our decline, but do not compare him to Wanny, at least thanks to Jimmy, we finally got a top 5 Defense.

Generally speaking.....

Things to like about Jimmy:
1) He built a great defense.
2) His team never had a losing record, and made the play-offs 3 out of 4 years, winning in the first round twice (which can also be turned into a negative; see below).

Things not to like about Jimmy (in no particular order):
1) He destroyed the offense.
2) His relationship with Marino.
3) He brought in Wanny.
4) He promised a Super Bowl in three years.....and never even won the division.
5) He alienated Shula.
6) He never got past the second round of the play-offs.

The way he treated Marino was a big negative, he said he was going to run and extend Marinos career, when he simplified the offense and took away his power to audible he actually shortened it IMO.

Good post. The bringing in wanny part is enough to hate him thou

IMO, Wanny did a much better job of coaching than JJ did. JJ definitely had a better eye for talent (at least on defense), but he selected poor assistants and is overrated as a coach. Wanny's first two choices for OC were fine, but ending with Foerster was very bad. JJ, othe other hand, stuck with Kippy Brown....

Wanny's biggest downfall was as a GM. He isn't a good enough coach to make up for the talent he brought in. All I need to do is to compare JJ's last year with Wanny's first two years. Wanny is definitely a better coach.

When JJ was getting ready to leave, I wished that he would stay on as GM. Now I'm glad they are both gone. Too much bad legacy for either of them to be associated with the Fins.

I agree with your last paragraph, I am glad that whole era is over!
