There was Michael Thomas, pressed into his first NFL action just five days after joining the Dolphins, reaching up and coming down in the end zone with a Tom Brady pass for an interception that secured Miami’s biggest victory of the season at a jubilant Sun Life Stadium.

Thomas was so overwhelmed by the moment he broke down and shed some tears, first on the sideline in the waning seconds of the game on that Dec. 15 afternoon and then in the tunnel walking back to the locker room afterward.

The moment, that glorious moment, was the culmination of a lot of hard work and perseverance for Thomas, who had spent his first 31 Sundays as an NFL player on the San Francisco 49ers practice squad.

Thomas, though, is hoping it was just the beginning. Put another way, Thomas is looking at the play against Brady as a springboard to bigger and better things.

“The bar is set high,” Thomas said. “I have the highest expectations for myself. I only want to keep getting better, so after that I just want to keep making plays like that to help my team win.”

Already, Thomas is in a better position to contribute to the Dolphins in 2014.

After being signed off the 49ers practice squad last Dec. 10, Thomas pretty much was playing catch-up the whole way in terms of learning the defensive system and the way the Dolphins go about things.

This time around, Thomas has had the benefit of being with the team from the start of the offseason conditioning program, through the Organized Team Activities and on to training camp.

“It feels good to actually have like full-time meetings, actually being able to practice, you’re not thrown out there with just three days with the team and having to play a game,” Thomas said. “So it’s good.

“Coming into the situation I came into last year, all I was trying to do was make a play, just try to fit in any way I can, extend my career in the league. Now, having a chance to actually learn the scheme, understand what the special teams coaches want, plus what Coach (Kevin) Coyle wants us to do on defense, actually having the time in the offseason, I feel way more confident now.”

Guys like this you want to see do well. Practice squad player, forced into action after three days with the team, making the play to win the game. Seems humble also.

He's very smart, athletic and was undaunted by the circumstances of his first game. To perform when the pressure was on tells me that Michael Thomas has inner strength. On top of that he excelled in all of the subsequent interviews, displaying humor and candor. At a minimum, he's good depth, but I look forward to seeing what he can do in Training Camp and the preseason games.
The only negative against him is that he admitted to being a good friend of Jonathan Martin - they played together at Stanford and apparently remain genuine buddies. It could be a battle between Michael Thomas and Jordan Kovacs for the final Special Teams/backup Safety roster spot and they're probably two of the smartest and highest character guys on the team.

Wanna make a vcash bet on which one sees the most action this coming season?? I'll take Dallas.

I think he was talking about Daniel. Reading the title I was expecting this thread to be about Dallas, I had completely forgotten about Micheal.

Incognito was a friend of Martin too. ... That can change.

Any player that picks Brady off and prevents another loss to the Pats gets a little more consideration from me. I really hope he can make some more strides and establish his position on this team.

Ok he made one play last yr, granted I loved it but lets see what you got kid, don't let that be the only play you tell your grand kids about.....

Ahh, I wasn't even thinking about Daniel, I thought he was talking about Dallas. You're probably right.

Actually he made another game saving play right before the pic, and he made another nice tackle in space and a 4th tackle in VERY close coverage on a slant late in that game. He was actually pretty impressive considering he had almost zero prep for that game as a CB.

He actually made 3 great plays on that drive. First, he tackled someone in bounds who took a short dump off and it forced NE to burn a time out. Seemed innocent enough but it was a great play. Then he broke up a nicely thrown fly route to Edelman that looked like an easy 6. And of course, then he sealed the deal w the pick. Don't know if we'll ever see a sequence like that from him again but boy would it be nice if we have a budding play maker on our hands.

Would be great to see him perform well in camp, make the roster and even push for a starting spot. Lord knows this team could use a nice "feel good" story.

he is my player to watch this year. i like guys who see nothing is working, or surmountable situations who gut it out and draw it up in the dirt.

this kid showed that character last year. if there was ever a situation set in stone for a player to fail, it was thomas's "david vs goliath" situation last year.

off the bench. no reps. no playbook study. no camp. and comes out in the heat of battle against a hall of fame qb who appears to be still in his prime. a guy who eats rooky db's with his eggs and toast every day. no one would cover the odds for him to succeed.

but, succeed he did. he had nothing in his arsenal coming out so he "drew it up in the dirt" and let his athleticism and skill and smarts take over. THAT is a player. the GREATS have that, no matter what position they play.

i am reminded of DAN MARINO when a reporter asked him "how he does it? how does he make those seemingly impossible plays over and over. is it his preperation? an over all command of the playbook? how much study of the playbook do you do?"

marino said "non of it. i just hit the guy who's open!!"

marino was one of those guys who was at his very best when all else was failing. his real skill was drawing up in the dirt and let it fly just like bart star, terry bradshaw, john elway, joe namath [who didnt even know what a playbook was], brett farve, peyton manning, dan fouts, etc.... .

hopefully thomas GETS A CHANCE to be developed. to get the reps needed and ones he deserves. i think this staff is eager to develop YOUNG talent. from the gm down to the coach [who was strangled by a meddling gm for his first two years] to the assistants, they welcome it. and, like don shula did, he let them have time and reps with the starters to see how they fair with and against the big boys. they have been doing some of this in camp this year.

turner is my rooky to watch, for all the thousands of reasons we have all discussed and debated in other threads. he is another draw it up in the dirt type.

we have LOTS to be excited about this year. the pouncy thing is a downer for sure, but, we havnt seen how that plays out yet. to much going on this season to let one thing spoil it all. thomas is one of those "good things".
