George Wilson was the Dolphins' first coach. He finished his four-year AFL tenure after the 1969 season with a 15-39-2 record. But those were not wasted years for the Dolphins because they were steadily adding new talent -- quarterback Bob Griese in 1967, running back Larry Csonka in 1968 and guard Larry Little in 1969 -- that would eventually turn them into winners.

The transition from losing to winning came in just one season in 1970 when new coach Don Shula led the Dolphins to an AFC wild-card playoff berth with a 10-4 record. Miami then followed with three straight AFC championships in 1971, 1972 and 1973 and victories in Super Bowls VII and VIII. Their combined 1972-1973 record was 32-2, also an all-time mark. From 1970 to 1974, their cumulative record was 65-15-1.

Ok we've been pretty bad these last couple of years but seriously how are we ever going to get it turned around if we keep having poor drafts. I think we had a great draft this year but thats what we think every year about our draft. My question is how long do you think it will take to get this turned around even if we havent had good drafts these past few years?

My guess is by 2010 we'll be a top 10 team by adding great linebackers, corners & recivers in the next two drafts since we shored up the o and d lines and Chad Henne will be that tough & mentally ready strong arm quarterback to lead us to a championship.

i personally can't wait for us to make the playoffs again, and finally, the SuperBowl!!!

i can't wait, and i feel it's coming soon! Coach Sparano even said this is not a rebuilding year, we will start competing now.. ha at least it's good motivation for the players.

I think we'll be a top team before 2010. While the best way to rebuild is through the draft, free agency fills in holes fast. Mueller had a good draft. That's when the rebuilding really started. 2009 will be a playoff year for Miami.

It sure would be nice to win a superbowl at home huh?

We are adding talent slowly but surly.
05 Draft: Brown, Roth and Crowder are all starters.
06 Draft: Allen might still pan out but this clearly the weakest draft of the last several.
07 Draft: Ginn and Satele will be starters for years to come.
08 Draft: You can make the argument that this years draft will yield at least 2 starters and maybe as many as 4.

That is almost half the team on the field from the last four drafts, that isn’t too bad. Realistically I feel stuff will come together pretty fast after the team gels. Look at the Rams after their horrible years 4-11 to 13-3 in one year. The reason for that was three years of solid drafting starting in 97 with Pace and collimating with 99 with Holt and Bly.

If you compare the Rams of the late 90’s early 2000’s to the Dolphins of the past few years there are a lot of similarities. So once all the pieces fall together look out. Winning is more contagious than loosing so after this years team gets a taste of winning and one year of development next year could realistically be a winning season.

Dolphin’s needs;

QB: Beck and company need to produce a reliable starting QB out of this batch. Does it have to be the second coming or Marino, no! Elie Manning won a Super Bowl and he is no Marino.

TE: Starting TE is big in the offense being installed so if Fasano can step up and block and catch some short yardage passes over the middle will be key.

CB: The Dolphins need a starting shut down cornerback, they do not have one yet nor is the solution to this problem on the current roster. Fortunately for the dolphins next years draft should be pretty deep at CB, oh and dido to free agent CB’s next year too!

Overall this franchise is not as bad for talent has you might think. Bill and the boys did a good job or reducing the age of the roster and getting bigger without losing talent. I would not be surprised if one of the QB’s step up this year if the Phins don’t win 4 to 6 games. There are some questions at Corner but there are also a lot of no names trying out right now and if one is a diamond in the rough then the secondary question just got a whole lot clearer. At worst case the Dolphins have a lot of options next year to address this problem.

i share your sentiments phinphan30

I will add this to it , we need to be able to throw the ball more then 5 yards so the defenses dont key up on ronnie and ricky. plus its paramount that our special teams can create a turnover and get kickoff and punt return for a td.

The bad thing about building through the draft is that you have to wait three years to see if your picks pan out. It looks like this is Hagen's year.
