from yahoo sports, story about the appointment of mike nolan in SF.

"Nolan is the son of former 49ers coach Dick Nolan, who won 56 games with San Francisco from 1968-75. They are the fifth father-son duo to coach in the NFL, and the first to coach the same team since Bum and Wade Phillips led the New Orleans Saints. "

surely there aren't really people across the water who are actually called Bum? (which doesn't mean homeless across here btw....)

That is sure to get a chuckle in some Scottish pubs but it wont cause a ripple in the USA.Old Bum Phillips was a spunky guy (Another term that most wont understand)

A few maybe, I think Bum might even have been a "nickname" for him, not sure.

Bum Phillips gave the quintessential defintion to Shula's greatness

"He can take his'n n beat your'n then turn around and take your'n n beat his'n"
His real name is Owell. Maybe Bum is better?
probably not. across here 'bum' means pretty much the same as 'fanny' does across there.

and i'm not about to get into why across here its wholly unacceptable to give someone a boot up the fanny...

god, i love being childish :D

You also can call a homeless person a Bum and someone who isnt very good at what they do. As for Jay Fielder was a bum at qb.
