We have a coach who's coaching players who were obtained by another coach.
This is causing three main problems:
1) Penalties. Saban's system requires SMART players. By and large he doesn't have them. Therefore guys are lining up thinking about what they need to do rather than acting on instinct, which keeps them from being focused enough not to commit penalties. This is also why Vernon Carey isn't playing -- he isn't smart enough to pick up the system. And guess who drafted him? Yep -- a different coach.
2) Growing Pains. We have a new system on offense, a new system on defense, and a totally new coaching staff, and the players are used to being in different systems with different coaches. When there are that many new ingredients in the mix, it's gonna need to cook a while (to borrow from Jimmy James in another thread -- great line Jimmy).
3) Leadership Issues. Any time a new regime takes over, it's going to emphasize certain styles of leadership over others, which basically reverts the team leadership structure back to ground zero. New leaders may need to emerge, and past leaders may need to lead differently.
Bottom line -- it's gonna take a while for Saban to get the kind of team he wants. Be patient.
