FORMER HUSKY BERGER SIGNED TO DOLPHINS’ 53-MAN ROSTER
Offensive Lineman Will Play on Sundays in Miami

HOUGHTON, Mich. -- Former Michigan Tech football player Joe Berger (Newaygo, Mich.) will be playing in the National Football League for the Miami Dolphins this year. The offensive lineman, who was originally drafted by the Carolina Panthers, was picked up by the Dolphins yesterday and placed on their 53-man roster.

Berger was a two-time All-American and Academic All-American for Michigan Tech before graduating last May with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was drafted in the sixth round of the NFL draft in April and spent all preseason in Carolina. The Panthers put Berger on their practice squad before the Dolphins came calling.

“This is great news for Joe and our football program,†said 19th-year MTU head coach Bernie Anderson. “We’re all very excited for him, and we know that he’ll represent Michigan Tech University well.â€Â

According to reports, Berger is slated to be second on the depth chart at the center position. He will likely be on the field for Sunday’s season opener. Miami hosts the Denver Broncos at 1 p.m.

No he has talent, there's no doubt however he's the backup C? I guess Ephraim is the backup guard now.

At least he should be smart enough to figure out the offense.

Michigan Tech is a hockey school but this guy was probably the best player they have had in many years.....great pickup!!! :)

Yes Dolphins signed a BERGER!!! If he only knew how to spell his name right.........

I saw him play against Northern Michigan, he was a beast amoung boys.

So we have added a 4th rounder (Gibson) and 6th rounder (Berger) from this year. Nick sure is making up for not having many draft picks. These guys were obviously high on our board.

He sounds like a great pickup by us. In a year or two, this dude may be able to compete for a starting spot on this team.

Did he play center or guard? We have the Alphonso guy (sp?) I thought as backup center - I'm assuming one of these guys or both will backup guard as well. IMO the problem with St. Clair was he is what he is - an avg lineman. If you want to be avg like Wanny and RS you keep him and play him over your 1st rd draft pick. If you want to be great you have to search out for great players. This guy may not be one but I like that we are not sitting around keeping avg guys.

From Lindy's football preview:

Joe Berger, G, Michigan Tech

Trying to make a big jump from Michigan Tech, but was an All-American at Division II school... Has mobility, but rarely has worked against the behemoths he will see in NFL... Did well at combine and a half-dozen teams put him on their draft boards.

Also listed as their "Could Surprise"- "Berger will need time, but there is a lot to work with."
