In my opinion this is whats happening ...

1. The Dolphins have begun talks with Jake Long and Vernon Gholston.

2. There going to talk contract with Chris Long, probably Dorsey, and maybe Ryan.

3. Since Jake, Gholston, and Ryan are all represented by the same firm and Jake and Ryan by the same agent it puts them against each other and gives us the upper hand.

4. The front office trifecta already knows who they want and will select. No dollar amount will change that.

5. Once they get all the players and agents against each other to try and get the contract for the #1 pick as low as possible, they'll agree to sign the player they intended to take all along.

6. At this point it can still be any one of them. The next couple weeks will be very interesting.

Correct. I would just add that I believe they have not yet begun negotiations with the player they want. I think he will be in the last wave because it would really add to their leverage if they can say so and so will accept this and so and so will accept that.

It is also very beneficial for the player to have no idea just how interested Miami actually is.

Matt Ryan isnt even in the equation anymore. They would have tried to work something out while his agent was in town. Its down to the two longs and Gholston.

This. You can't pit two players with the same agent against each other. The agent will seek the maximum amount for the #1 overall pick regardless of the player involved, and he'll certainly have the players in agreeance with him.

Normally I would agree with you...but lets face it...there's a strong wind blowing and in a couple months the CBA will be no more...this is just the start of a new way of doing business. The right player for the right price.

There will be a new CBA - no one, owner or player is stupid enough to shoot themselves in the foot and kill the profits. While there may no longer be a cap, the labor restrictions will be ludicrous enough to force both sides to work a deal.

Besides, any deals made this year have to be made under the current rules, no way around it.

I think you'll agree...that the way the rookies are getting top money now...is going to change...and it has nothing to do with the CBA...The owners have had it...the players have had it...a rookies cap is soon to be a reality...and my guess is...Parcells will start it this year...he'll make the player in this draft, an offer they can't refuse.

I completely agree with you, but i just wanted to avoid saying that so this doesnt turn into another freakin Matt Ryan thread as it seems every other one has.

Here's how it'll go if they can't agree on a new CBA - they'll strike in 2011, destroying all of the gains they've made over the years. 2010 will be an uncapped year, but the restrictions on free agency and money at that point will be draconian. This draft right now is the last, best chance for a rookie to get paid like they have been over the past decade. What kind of offer is Parcells going to make? Hey, take an offer at what the #4 spot went for last year? He's got no leverage under the current rules, and the current rules is what they have to play by.

I still believe Parcells has something up his sleeve. The fact that the Dolphins aren't even using Ryan at all...sparks my interest. Something is up.

Throw Glenn Dorsey into the "silence is deafening" category as well.

Definitely going to be an interesting next 16 days ...
