"Defensive end Kevin Carter said the Dolphins were overconfident before their first matchup against New York because the team was still relishing a 34-10 rout of Denver in the season-opener. The Jets won 17-7 at Giants Stadium.

"Our attitude was totally all wrong, and we got our butts kicked," Carter said. "We hadn't developed the will and toughness we have now. We were still in the process of finding ourselves."

How many of you can honestly remember a time when you could really understand what Carter said..and believed the Phins had that type of mental toughness. That type of mental toughness has been missing for a long, long time. And thanks to Nick Saban.....its back,

That sounds like an excuse. You should never be overconfident in a NFL game.

An excuse? Admitting what Carter admitted is just about the last thing I can imagine somebody using as an excuse. I can only believe that it is true.

I think the point he was making...as was I for posting this...is that Saban's personality is starting to really emerge on this team. The old Dolphins DID take teams lightly. We are beginning to get tough...physically as well as mentally. Like Saban said..its all part of the process. I have a feeling it will be a long long time before you see a Saban coached team take another team for granted.

Too bad Bollenger didn't start last time we played...I think it will be different this Sunday. Kick the Jets when they are down.

What wouldn't be an excuse then?

That is an honest player, how often do you hear someone say that they got their butts kicked because they weren't tough enough?

This makes me excited for tomorrows game.

He's admitting they lost because they were overconfident. How is that an excuse?

He is placing the blame on himself and the team, not something petty or stupid.

for real, at least he's not blaming it on some whazoo referee conspiracy...

The quote makes sense.. Most of our wins have been when we were playing the underdog....... Upsetting top teams.. or come from behind wins when everyone counted us out..

We got smoked twice , especially in cleveland when the guys probably thought they would have a feild day with dilfer..

Hopefully saban can project his attitude onto the players.. (if it hasnt already)

An excuse is stating a reason with the purpose of justifying your shortcoming. Basically it is saying "it's not our fault." A reason is stating a reason for your shortcoming and taking the blame. I think it this instance, he is taking responsibility for their poor performance and not tryin to say "it's ok because it really wasn't our fault". I like what he says. It's gonna be ugly for the Jest today.
