Go get me a juice box!
I'm getting sick and tired of the constant excuse that Saban inherited a terrible team from Wanny and that's the definitive reason for why the team looks so bad this year. That excuse shows me the short-sightedness and obsession with scapegoating many fans on this board have when the team fails to live up to homeristic standards.
I am by no means defending Wanny. He most certainly had a hand in the downfall of this organization............he just happened to be there when the bottom finally fell out. This organizations failure now were set in motion nearly a decade ago and every regime since then has helped in it's demise. Let's rewind back to Don Shula's final years. It was clear with the advent of free-agency he was trying to do whatever possible to get Dan Marino his championship and get this franchise back to it's original glories. This calculation misfired terribly. Signings like Steve Emtman..........Eric Green.......... high priced bums who were cashing in on this new found freedom of free agency. Shula's mishandling of our cap put the team in a bind, not to mention his porous drafts. Can we at least admit that Shula & Co. did a horrendous job evaluating talent towards the end of his tenure? I mean how many times did we fail at landing offensive lineman, runngingbacks, or the defense for that matter? I mean do I have to point to the Tom Olivadotti years and the turds he coached?
Insert Jimmy Johnson, known for his mastery of his handling of the embarrasing Cowboys organization. Armed with one of the league's most formidable players, he traded him away and amassed draft picks which would enable the team to find nearly unparalleled success in the 90's. He got an amazing QB, WR, RB, O-line, and D........the man simply couldn't miss. When he came on board to Miami, everyone expected the same because it was assumed the man was an absolute genious in the personnel scouting department. What was the final result of his tenure? A 62-7 drubbing....... arguably the most embarrassing loss this team has ever seen........ it led to the eventual retirement of this franchise's savior Dan Marino.............
But Jimmy was such a draft guru right? So one would be inclined to think he stocked this team up nicely regardless of what he was able to get out of them right? Wrong. Uggggghhhh ........... he desimated the talent level on offense for multiple seasons........striking out on nearly every offensive draft pick. His defensive selections, from first glance, appeared to be in need of an applause. But how much? I mean these guys undoubtedly performed at a high level, but against who? How many meltdowns did we bear witness to when playing the league's top talents? How many Nov./Dec. swoons were witnessed? Less we not forget JJ's handling of Marino. He completely handicapped him...........took away his ability to audible which was by far and away one of Marino's most amazing talents. You all have seen what Peyton does up there at the line, well Marino was the pioneer of that kind of ability.
Exit JJ, enter Wanny. The man fully endorsed by JJ, so much so that JJ would only return for his final season is Wanny was to be his successor. Wanny comes in and immediately helps to facilitate a trade to resurrect visions of a running attack only seen back when the likes of Cszonka and Morris were Dolphins. He forced the hand of Danny's retirement. Brought in unproven talents in Lamar Smith and Jay Fieldler and had a fairly sucessful first season. However, he too was unable to assemble proper talent for this team's offense. Sure he got guys like Chambers and McMichael, yet the fact remained he couldn't get a real QB........he couldn't get ANY offensive lineman..........and in all actuality he was never able to draft any players capable of backing up our studs on D and taking over for them when they were done. Our cap hell was a continued roll-over effect from the past two regimes and like his predecessors before him he was forced to try and patch all the glaring holes on this team with the inflated contracts of free-agents who never panned out. Dec./Nov. swoons continued like they did with Shula and JJ..........and finally the most glaring mishap of his tenure - Ricky Williams retirement.
Exit Ricky. Ricky's retirement was the final straw..........representative of the failures of this franchise set in motion nearly a decade ago. Ricky's retirement was indicative of everything wrong with this organization. It simply crushed the morale. Everything bad that could happen did following his retirement.....coaching fueds........player injuries amassed. This organizations handling of it's player personnel has been absolutely attrocious over the past decade. We were able to patch it up with bandaids and gause under the guise that we were remaining competitive, but it defied all odds for that to continue forever. Face it, as much as people like to scapegoat Wanny, many of us were fooled into thinking that we were competitive..........that we always were a contender.........but when you examine this team over the past decade, we've been a dam with small cracks - cracks which eventually loosened, widened, and finally led to the flood after the dam gave out.
