After this week’s preseason games -- the very important third exhibition when veterans typically get extended playing time -- the next important date on the NFL calendar is not the throw-away fourth preseason games but rather cutdown weekend.

That culminates on Aug. 31 when all clubs must cut their rosters to 53 players. And one day later, at 1 p.m. on Sept. 1, clubs can begin to establish their 10-man practice squads, with teams (such as the Dolphins) that have a player in the international player development program able to add that player to the practice squad in addition to the 10.

And this fact speaks to how young the 2019 Dolphins are:

Miami right now has 60 players eligible for the practice squad.

Interesting article, but doesn't change the fact that we are limited to 11 players on the taxi squad. (With that extra international spot)

Also unlikely we put any of our drafted players on it because they will get poached. Guys like Gaskin and Prince aren't getting cut.

Is gaskin really a lock?
I think he is if we keep 5 active. He can return punts, and is a good reciever. I don't know about his pass blocking ability, but I haven't heard anything negative. He has great vision, and sets blocks up like a veteran.

So he's not a 4.4 40 guy. He has enough football speed to get the job done.

Doesn't make it easier to pick the roster it's makes it harder....

I think Armando is a bit of a goofball, but he writes some pretty decent articles when he not trolling for click bait.

as far as rookies go, i think prince, cox, and gaskins could all slide thru the cracks, late round picks that didnt really show out in preseason normally do. not to mention i think i read alot saying we over drafted Prince.

with the way Laird has performed he might get picked up faster than Gaskins if not retained to 53

but heck im sure 30 of those 60 he are claiming are 100% young camp fodder like most teams have. and the other are the handful of picks the last couple years. whenever start discussing the PS, and you mention, Rosen is eligible but likely not going. then you're just doing a filler piece like someone else say above.

maybe write we have 10 spots on the PS, and probably about 15 worth vying for it if they cant make the 53, that way you dont even start saying stupid **** like rosen is eligible, ballage, gesecki are eligble.

I dont think hes a lock because of his play, it is just unusual for a team to risk losing a drafted commodity by trying to stash him on the PS.

It could happen, that's how we snagged Luke Falk from the Titans, but that's the risk you take if you dont keep them.

The UDFAs, second, and third year players will likely be cut first imo.

I think gaskin will get decent run tonight. Be interesting to see if he gets 3rd down looks.

I look for ballage and Walton to get lions share.

Laird and Farrow and probably gaskins in the preseason finale

I agree that Laird is potentially a quick pick up for other teams if let go. Tonights game in my opinion seals him on the team if he looks good, but if he doesn't play well, that will not necessarily mean he's history...he's impressed too much so far.

As far as the 3 RB's trying to make it, it could come down to who can pass protect. If for some miracle our O-line gets better this year it'd still take some time for it to happen. I believe we'll be asking our RB's to pass protect a lot and TBH, I'm not sure which of the 3 can do that better. I'll be watching for that tonight and next week.
