This last injury was in the weightroom...Its unfortunate the man was trying to lift too much weight to be that starting RG we needed it was a fluke injury...I'd be more worried if he was hurt in drills doing football movements...I think he'll be OK. Guys have come back from far worse. It's not like he re-injured his leg.
I agree with SR 7 on this one.
An injury during a drill or game can be much more easily chalked up to being random or a freak occurance.
The weight room is a controlled environment. Even moreso if it was at the team facility. They have trainers and or spotters available and monitoring the workouts.
Tearing a muscle while working out, due either to performing the exercise incorrectly or trying to push too hard is less easily forgivable.
Injuries that occur when bodies are flying around the field are unavoidable risks. Thomas' latest injury was avoidable.
Either way, he is missing WAY too much practice time (Between last year and this year), maybe "write-off" wasnt the exact term to use, because he could very well come back and play well the rest of his career.
My usage of "write-off" was more that *I* will not count on him to be a contributor on the team, at least until he proves otherwise.
Too many of us have relied on how he played in TC and preseason last year and expected him to contribute this year, even though his injuries have kept him from knowing how good (or bad) he really is.
Making excuses for an injured veteran is one thing (and it has burned us in the past, ie Daunte Culpepper, Trent Green.), making excuses for an injured rookie (2nd year, but played 1 game last year.) is something else entirely. I for one am not going to become a Donald Thomas apologist, I'm sorry but the guy has yet to prove a damn thing on the football field.
