Nobody seems to be talking about this, but in a recent article I saw, David Bowens was discussing playing DE and LB in Sabans defense. We already knew that Jason Taylor was going to be splitting time at both positions, so I think this gives us a little insight into what Saban is trying to do. It might also help explain some of his personnel moves since coming on board. Some people have asked "Why is he signing so many defensive ends?" Well, if he's going to routinely use some of those DEs at LB in certain alignments, it makes sense.

In the 3-4 alignment he wants bigger LB's... ok, so I can see a 3-4 alignment with either Traylor or Chester at NT, Holliday and Carter at DE, and D. Bowens and J. Taylor at OLB, with probably Zach and Junior, or maybe Junior and D. Spragan at ILB. That's a defense with some fairly serious bulk to it.

in the 4-3, we might see Chester and Traylor at DT, Bowens and Taylor at DE, and Junior, Zach, and maybe Derrick Pope or Donnie Spragan at LB.

It seems like we have a lot of versatilty to do a lot of different things on defense with the personnel we've brought in. And that's without even considering the rookies.

Taking the rookies into consideration, Crowder can play any LB position, Roth is an ideal 4-3 LDE or a 3-4 DE, and I think a darkhorse making the team is Lionel Turner who comes from LSU, is 6-2 258 LBs and knows Saban's college system. Adding in those guys with the veterans we already have and we have some serious bulk in the front seven with some versatile players. And I almost forgot Manuel Wright, all 6-6 329 LBs of him. It'll probably take a year or two for him to learn the system and to get into shape but after that the sky is the limit for this guy.

I also think Roth will be used as a pass rushing LB in certain situations
