For whatever boring whiny reasons I guess I have not been covering us as closely as I normally do. I need some help here figuring out what is going on here.

I was watching some video reports and reading some others from Detroit news sources. A few times they mentioned we had the 2nd best secondary in the NFL. And they meant that stat wise, as in we are allowing the 2nd least passing yards per game.

Which got a part of my brain running over the names in our secondary. Hmmmm, no CB that we traded two 1st for, no superstar. Grimes often plays like one but he is not considered a top 10 corner. If you ran a fantasy draft Grimes would not be a top 20-30 pick at corner. I thought the secondary was supposed to be a semi problem area for us.

Then i thought, well, it is not all the back 4, it is also our front 4. It is our pressure that helps our DBs. We are 5th in sacks. Watching replays I saw where every interception was a result of a Dolphin attacking the QB. They will mostly go down as "QB Hits" and "hurries" but they caused the passes to be off. And unlike the last few years, our secondary has been leaping and diving and snagging every deflected ball.

And wait, 2nd in passing yards per game means our Linebackers are covering. WTF? When did this start happening? O wait, pressure, pressure, pressure. Hold on, Linebackers was supposed to be a total mess for us........I know I've been busy lately but when did things start falling into place?

We are the "3rd rated" defense yards wise and points wise so no slight of hand here, our defense is good. In fact, it is really really good. Good mix of ages and we have a rotation of pass rushers.

But what is really cool is that some how we are also the 9th best scoring team in the NFL at 26.4 PPG. 9th in the NFL does not seems overwhelming but you have to remember we were 26th last season and 27th the year before that. So for us to jump to 9th in a great sign for me, I knew our defense would be good, I think most Dolphins fans believed that we would have a good if not very good defense this season. If you add us being 9th in offense and being a top 3 defense and being the 4th best running team, that makes a combo that is hard to beat. And this Tannehill guy has 14 TDs to only 6 interceptions. Crazy.

I've always said it all comes from top down. You need a semi stable owner who is willing to spend money and stay semi out. Then you need a good General manager. Then you need the part where the rubber hits the road. The Head Coach and the assistant coaches.

It now all comes from the Head Coach. The right Head Coach in any sport is often more important then anything else. In the NFL, it is everything. We got ourselves a 'Iceman". And he brought a friend who helped us decide if we should draft Tannehill and was our poor OC. But he is gone and been replaced by maybe the best hire in the NFL, Bill Lazor.

So we now seem to have a good HC and a good OC and DC.

After watching us line up for years in the exact same places and formations was maddening. Now we set up everywhere, move everywhere, attack everywhere. I'm feeling it.

It's impressive that installing a new offense took only a handful of games to start seeing these results. Speaks volumes for Lazor and his assitants as well as the players.

Gonna be a huge test this week vs the best WR in the NFL. I am still optimistically waiting to buy in on this team. The next 2 games will go a long way to show who this team really is.

If you ran a fantasy draft and Grimes wasn't a top 20-30 pick at corner then you need to stop playing fantasy...just stop watching football.

not for nothing, but most super bowl WINNING teams have a top 10 offense AND top 10 defense.

I agree with you on almost everything u said, except for the grimes part. Grimes IS considered elite. Was in ATL before his injury and was last year (pro bowl). Everything else is spot on. Good post.

Actually Grimes gets alot of national attention along with cam wake.

Grimes is absolutely, without a doubt a top 10 corner.

Grimes and Finnigan are doing well under the stricter enforcement of the holding calls, etc. Neither one had to adjust for it in their style because they both play and excel at off coverage. Delmas has played well and certainly benefits from the front 7 pass rush. R. Jones is playing some excellent football since his return. He has had one eye sore which was in the first quarter vs GB, but after that he's played very solid with 2 INT's and a sack.

Looking thru the stats of this team offensively and defensively, especially within the past 3-4 week period has been slightly surreal. I can get used to this.

Sorry, I did not mean that in a fantasy football thing, I did not write this well. I was thinking like a Madden league and I always draft for the long term so..because of his age....the speed stat drops faster this year after age 30.....I'm simply reflecting that we seem to be playing much better then a lot of people expected early in the year before the season started.

Notice how the Seahawks D is getting killed with the new and more enforced defensive penalty rules.

Most peolpe hate to admit but a big part of Sherman's game involves being handsy and slight tugs at the jersey etc.

I don't agree most people thought our defense would be good. Most people thought Coyle sucked and wanted him fired. Most people thought the defense would continue to be bad this season. This is from just weeks ago from a couple of respected posters:

I really don't understand how Coyle has a job still. He makes some of the most moronic decisions and outsmarts himself constantly. Half the time his blitzes don't work because hes trying to stunt his D-line instead of just having them win straight up. I did like how he had McCain as a spy because his downhill speed and acceleration is off the charts. I don't see why he's not blitzing him though.
It's because most of our top flight talent is on the defensive side of the ball. People don't seem to understand how much we're underperforming.

Yeah, we were only number 2 in NY/A at that point...

Anyway, we are number one against the pass in DVOA right now. How other teams have performed being number 1 in this stat over the years lately:

2013: Seattle Seahawks 13-3 Super Bowl Champions
2012: Chicago Bears 10-6 missed playoffs
2011: Baltimore Ravens 12-4 AFC Championship
2010: Green Bay Packers 10-6 Super Bowl Champions
2009: NY Jets 9-7 AFC Championship
2008: Pittsburgh Steelers 12-4 Super Bowl Champions
2007 Tennesee Titans 10-6 Wildcard
2006 Chicago Bears 13-3 Super Bowl Appearance
2005 Chicago Bears 11-5 Divisional Round

For an average record of 11-5 and 44% were Super Bowl teams.

The biggest reason for our good coverage stats is the emergence of Jelani Jenkins.

Kid is covering TEs and RBs coming out of the flat. Which makes Jones the roaming enforcer he excels at.

I can't even name 20 starting corners so to say Grimes isn't is just lolwut. Grimes is top 5 and can probably make a case for top 3. Delmas is so much better than Clemons was and Finnegan has actually gotten closer to his Tennessee days than his St. Louis days.

The secondary is good to great. That's why they're allowing about 200 yards a game.

LikeUntoGod,

Before I read further into this thread for comments on the things you brought up, let me say these are very well considered thoughts and the stats you list are very, very encouraging. I knew they were in that neighborhood. But, good to know exactly what they are, and right next to each other. That helps us see how much the combination of top 10 stats, from a variety of facets of our team, make us so much stronger. Thank you.

I also must agree with you that things seem to have finally washed out in our favor. Although the end of last season was so very disappointing, I'm still amazed we did as well as we did with that hot mess on the OL. Just getting into position to threaten for the playoffs was quite an achievement by Philbin.

This year, all appears to be melded and set right into an intended and planned order with outside distractions at a minimum. Yup, there was an ugly learning curve for this wonderful new offensive scheme, but it's clear now what the goal was, and how much it was worth the investment. The scheme is also helping our defense shine by staying on the field and earning field position and points, for the most part.

I think the top 3 guys on our coaching staff have been vastly underrated; more so by FinHeaven than the press, IMO. These days, in a new NFL created by sweeping new rules, it is hard to be LIKELY to win more than half of your games. It's kinda like baseball and backgammon in that way. The difference the capability to win between competing teams is so small now. The days of dynasties are long over. Fans need to understand that this is not a thing like simply flicking a switch. A team has to be painstakingly assembled and then nurtured into a consistent winner.

I think we are finally beginning to see the fruits of that building process now. Crossing my fingers . . .

Im not surprised about our secondary at all, Grimes has continued where he left off, Delmas was an upgrade and Finnegan was an upgrade. Having Jones back after the suspension lifted an already excelling secondary
