So let me get this straight, out of Jim "I'd rather be coaching at Washington while my team is in the playoff hunt" Mora(front runner by the way) and Chan "I challenge you to keep awake watching my offense" Gailey, Mike "My family IS the Dolphins" Shula is not getting the uncontested vote?

If we were talking Bill Cowher, if we were talking Bill Parcells, if we were talking Marty Schottenheimer then absolutely, talking Mike Shula would be an act of lunacy. But what are we talkin bout ova here? We're talkin Mora Jr, Gailey? At day's end alll three candidates may very well be three jokes with no punchlines but you gotta be pulling for Mike. You just have to.

The kid has been sweating for this organization since he was a little boy chasing pigskins for his ol man. His family has lived the Miami Dolphins. Hell, they built the Miami Dolphins. And you think you bums(me too) watching, and rooting, and "bleeding" for your squad on Sundays are doing something for your team? This guy is our team and has been way before the glitz, the glamour, and the millions of dollars.

Gailey and Mora might have the X's and O's over Mike, but not by some gaping margin. And the love, loyalty, and legacy that Shula brings to the table all but crushes that gap.

We already chose a genius. We were mesmerized with his experience, and dazzled by his knowledge. But no one stopped to gauge his heart. Don't make that same mistake twice. Please.

Heart is a huge factor into any equation!,BUT this time around it would be nice if it came with much more experience.

It does. It comes from knowing and learning from Don Shula over a period that extends from his birth to today. NOBODY else, has that much experience.

I seem to remember some of the same hoopla when we had Griese jnr under centre and look what happened.

...and the same sort of hoopla when Peyton Manning came out of college.

Of course, Peyton had a good college career as did Griese so those things are not great predictors.

Legacy and heart and all that doesn't make you a good coach. Ability does. I don't know which candidate is the better game day decision maker. Whoever is should be the candidate. Everything else is irrelevant.

There is a gaping hole regarding X's and O's between Shula and the other 2. I don't know if you watched Bama play the last couple of years, but they were terrible, despite that 10-2 record two years ago. Shula is a terrible game manager and doesn't have a quarter of the football knowledge his father did. The fact that his last name is Shula should have absolutely nothing to do with why he is being considered.

Just say NO to Mike Shula!!!

Love? Heart? Puhlease. These are not the primary qualifications of a HC. I expect it from all of them. What Saban did is an anomaly. It is very rare for a HC to pack up and leave after 2 years. I beleive Saban's departure was so shocking to many because ,until that last month, there was absolutely no indication that he was leaving. He was a tireless worker that seemd committed. The reality is that the average NFL HC will get canned before they quit.
Look, Dave Wannstedt had passion and committment but that didn't make him a good coach. chris Palmer had heart and passion. How did he fare? If Wayne is going to hire a guy just because he loves the Dolphins then maybe he should interview a few hundred on this site.
To compare Shula to Gailey or even Mora is ridiculous. Not even in the same league. It's not that I'm a fan of either Gailey or Mora- of all the candidates listed, however, Gailey is the best, by a longshot-but Shula as HC is just a joke.
I suspect that the reason this coaching search is taking so long is that, frankly, the Dolphins have not been impressed by anyone. In my opinion there was only one guy who could have turned things around and he apparently is not interested. Scott Pioli, however, would have been the best thing that Wayne H could have ever done. Letting Pioli chose our nect HC would have been the right thing to do.

In that case why look for someone with coaching experience at all?? Why not have a "the best fan" contest and whoever wins it gets named HC?? "His loyalty and legacy all but crushes the gap"?? Are you kidding?? Being a big fan of the dolphins does not make you a choice for next leader of the franchise!!!

I have to agree here...many seem to be in love with the last name rather than the actual coach himself...

And you wonder why you are burning in flames? Blasphemer! :sr23:
Look guys, it's not just a name, it's a way of life. The Miami Dolphins have been as much a part of Mike's life as his own family. When you idolize your dad, and I'm just gonna take a shot in the dark and say Mike does, having become a coach and all, you kinda learn to love and appreciate the things your dad does. Sometimes it's even a tad eerie. Mike Shula is emotionaly and historically attached to this organization. If you're all that worried about X's and O's then you go get the man the best OC money can buy. They already got a top 5 DC and a top 5 OLC. Bring in Marino as a QBC and we've got ourselves history in the making. Literally and figuratively.

Remember, Shula is my pick over Gailey or Mora which are just as big of question marks in their own right as Shula. Hopefully Marty will get shown the door in San Diego and this will all be a non-issue sooner rather than later.

Very good post!!!!
But I think even Mike Shula would have been running LT a heck of alot more in the second half last weekend than Marty/Cam.... and more likely onto the AFC championship
