Our defense. I knew we had some areas of concern of defense, but I thought Saban could magically scheme around them. I remember, especially during the beginning of last year, our defense was dominant. Our D-line got after quarterbacks and our secondary usually shut down opponents' passing games.

We've had some key personnel changes this year. Saban let Surtain go for a second rounder. I can see how it needed to be done, but no doubt that move is really hurting us right now; we are sorely in need of another formidable corner. The guys Saban brought in on the D-line are doing a good job against the run for the most part, but they are not getting pressure on the quarterback at all. A defense that was good last year now looks below average.

That's my biggest disappointment. I honestly thought we had a very talented defense with a few holes. That still may be true, but we cannot seem to disguise our weaknesses like I hoped we could. The offense has not been great, but at least it's not the laughing-stock it was last year. Gus is not the answer, but I don't know that anyone really thought he was.

Trust me......this offense is still a laughing stock. Having a mediocre defense makes it look even worse.

Well i think maybe we will need to completly dismantle the defense and just make a modification or two on offense. as it stands now i think i would draft the following.
rd 1 cb
rd 2 dt
rd 3 qb
rd 4 ol
rd 5 cb
rd 7 linebacker
rd 8 safety
then bring in three free agent olinemen

I think if Miami can get a young NFL QB like Matt Shaub and sign Nate Clemens Miami should draft AJ Hawk..That guy is a beast....

we are a QB away from being competitive IMO

With all due respect, this OL would get any other less experienced qb killed. Gus isn't a good qb at all, but his experience at least allows him to avoid sacks - and a certain death behind this line. You think that 38% completion rate is all him?

We need a lot more than just a qb, unless we want to hover around 8-8 every year.

Yeah, most of it is. Have you seen him when he has time to throw? Pass goes right over someone's head.

Great point Cheo. Cant believe everyones talking about qbs. This line has benn terrible for way too long.

It's more than just one player but I'm most disappointed at how poorly Gus has played. I thought he'd at least make us respectable but we're having another year similar to '04's disaster.

Our D has been struggling, but part of it is injuries. The dropoff between Madison and Howard is massive and that was obvious last night. They picked on Howard all game. The run defense has really struggled without Seau. I'm not making excuses, this defense isn't what it used to be, but it is still a good unit that is hurt by injuries.

Next year we need to add to our defense, but we also have to remember Mitchell and Poole will be back next year and both could have big impacts on the secondary. Thats why I don't think we need to take a CB on the first day unless it is someone who drops big and would be a good value pick. I wouldn't mind picking up Clements, but I think we need to spend alot of money on an offensive line, take a QB on day one (preferably in the first) and get a LB and either a DT, WR, or safety with the other day one pick.

I think allot of Sabans D-schemes are based on solid play from the secondary. Losing Poole hurt us but I think Saban counted on Madison performing better than he is. Right now our secondary really has no steady, reliable guy to hang our hat on. This offense requires good play from the qb to be succesfull. I like Gus as a person but he just isn't making plays that are there to be made. The WR's have had some drops but you can't afford to miss wide open guys in the NFL. The other teams are to good and will make you pay for not capitalizing. Personally I would like to see Sage take the reigns for now and if he can't do it any better than Gus after 4-5 games, then Cleo should have enough of an understanding to get in there and see what he can do.

a good qb can mask alot of problems......by making plays....believe me.......this qb is the problem

The O-line needs to be upgraded, but QB is by far our greatest need right now.
