Miguel Cabrera and the Detroit Tigers have reached a preliminary agreement on a $152.3 million, eight-year contract, according a personal familiar with the deal.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the contract was not yet final. The third baseman must pass a physical before the agreement can be finalized.

Cabrera's average salary of $19,037,500 will be the fourth-highest in the major leagues behind Alex Rodriguez ($27.5 million), Johan Santana ($22,916,667) and Manny Ramirez ($20 million).

thats rediculous...He may be one of the best young hitters in baseball, but he will weigh close to 300lbs in the next few yrs and will hardly be able to get the bat around....he wont play out that contract.

no chance of that happening at all.

as Gary Matthews said "that money buys a lot of arroz con pollo"

Hopefully Cabrera, who's in great shape NOW doesn't revert to his lazy stage and spend all his money getting fat in the off-season.

Cabrera is 24 years old, so in 8 years he will be looking for another 100 million dollar contract.

152.3 is a bargain for the Tigers. He could have easily gotten 200 million if he waited for free agency but I guess he and his agent wanted to play it safe in case he got hurt and his value decreased. Good for Miggy, he deserves it.

Damn, he is really considered to be that good. I remember when he first started playing down here, people said he would be the next big thing, and they were right. Sucks we couldn't keep him around....

Also, I found it interesting that the Top 4 highest payed players, at least according to that article are Hispanic. Surprised that noone like Josh Beckett is on that list.

Good for Miggy. Good for Dave. And Good for Tigers. They are Marlins-north now. Huge fan.

I hope they DOMINATE.

Jesus why do baseball players make soo much money? I just dont get it.

Because teams make alot of money. It'll be worth it if Cabrera stays in shape. Even if he eats himself out of 3B he'll have the chance to DH or move to 1b.

Because Baseball like the NFL and the NBA and i guess even the NHL is a HUGELY profitable sport and thus has to pay it's players very well since they make it all happen.

Cabrera has been one of the best hitters in the league despite his weight; he was always one of the top players in batting average.

Only thing he needs to really work on is to make better decisions at third base; he causes a ton of errors.

But other than that, the Tigers are getting one of the best bats in the league, and he's just 24.

I wish him the best, but if thats just a little excessive.

The Tigers are going to be damn good this year. We're loaded everywhere. I'm excited for this year.
