No matter how you look at it we need a fresh start. We have been trying to piece togethor this offense for years and have never been succesful. We now have a coach in place who is more qualified to rebuild this offense than any coach we've had since Shula. We need to let the man do his job. Many of us want to give Culpepper a second chance to see what Cameron can do with him, well hell then why not give Harrington a second chance as well? He played better than Culpepper did with this team. Some of us want to give Chambers his 7th chance to get it right, well hell let's give Booker a contract extension as well so he has another 4 years to break out. Might as well throw McMichael in there and give Peele a 6 year deal, it's only fair that everyone is afforded the same opportunities here.

Now does this all sound ridiculous? It sure does, look at the Pats every player is expendable, they lose all their DB's and throw WR's out there instead and still get to the championship game. This is a business, just because you have formed an affinity with certain players doesn't mean we need to keep them. If we kept every player someone has an affinity for we would never get anywhere, just continue to run in circles like we've been doing for far too long now.

It's time to wipe the slate start getting rid of these big money guys, and bring in some youth. It's time to put our own feelings for certain players aside in order to make room for bigger and better things down the road from this team.

LOL......man we are on the same page today......I just wrote basically the same piece at the same time!

I'm with you. I used to be enamored with flashy names when I was younger. I've since learned you need a team, not just talented names.

Iagree with ya bluehaze another point to is with younger players you can be good for years possibly build a destiny. With big names and contracts u might have a good year but then the whole team is gone the next season because of money reasons.

Why do we give Culpepper one more shot and not Harrington? Because Culpepper made a few pro bowls, Harrington hasn't done jack in this league. I'm not a Culpepper fan, but I say give him ONE more season, that is all, if he fails again THEN you cut your losses and give up on him.

Why do we give Chambers another chance? Because he is one of the most talented wideouts in the league...but one of the most inconsistent as well. Lets see if Cameron and his offensive background can put that much needed spark in chambers game. Once again, I'm not a big Chambers fan and would be willing to trade him. But you're not gonna get a good value, so you might as well keep him.

I get what you're saying, but you gotta be reasonable here.

Good read...

One thing this team needs to stop doing, is trading away valuable draft picks. That's how you build / re-build the foundation of your football team. We've been mortgaging it for far too long. We need our draft picks, and we need to use them wisely from now....

PHINZ RULE!!!!

You have my vote for post of the year so far. Man, it's refreshing to hear something like this, and people can flame me all they want. I think you nailed it on the head with what it takes to win in the NFL today. Great Post!

That's the risk you run. It's actually going to save us a little money, I think $1.3M this year, and some of the dead cap hit in 2008 will be absorbed by the increase in the salary cap in that season.

Yes but you still need those flashy names at certain positions to be successful. If the Patriots didnt have a QB like Brady they wouldnt be 3 time champs. To me QB is the biggest position for a team to be successful.
I think its getting the players that want a championship. Brady turned down more money so that NE can get better players at other positions. Zach Thomas and Jason Taylor have restructured many times to try to get this team better but somehow it hasnt because of the wrong players we give big contracts to... for the most part i agree with you guys

Always on the ball brother. I expected nothing less. Good stuff.

The highlighted seems to happen around here all the time. It cracks me up when I'm reading debates on Culpepper and everyone defending the guy has a sig with Daunte gleaming in the sunshine.

There is a balance to what you are saying. I do believe every player at every position should have to earn his spot every season. Don't keep a player around just because he's a big name- if he's not producing cut his butt. On the other hand, your idea to 'wipe the slate clean' is a little overboard. There are certain players that deserve to stick around because they are helping the club- even if they are a little older.

I am being reasonable here, to me it's reasonable to let players go in order to garner a fresh start. It is unreasonable to keep players here solely for the reason that we are afraid they might go somewhere else and light it up. So what if Culpepper goes elsewhere and does well? We have arguably the most talented groomer of QB's ever as our HC surely we don't need to cling to Culpepper to find success at the QB position. We can draft a younger QB and let this man develop him. The same can be said for Chambers, Booker and McMichael they may do great elsewhere but all the controversy these guys stirred up last year saying Culpepper is their QB and not supporting Harrington was just pathetic. In order to have a fresh start you need fresh faces, ones willing to accept whoever the coach puts on the field and do their very best for the team instead of lamenting the loss of the QB they felt an affinity for.

My position at this point is, I will support whichever route Cam Cameron wants to go with this offense. He was hired as an offensive expert to evaluate and build this offense as he sees fit, lets let him do his thing and fail or succeed before we get overly critical of the decisions he makes to get there.

Your post seems to somewhat contradict itself, you begin by acknowledging that Cam is more qualified than any coach we've had since Shula to rebuild this offense, and that we should let him do his job, but you proceed to say he should wipe the slate clean of big money players.

Shouldn't we let Cam decide who we keep and who we eject? I hope my perception of your post is wrong, when you started out I was in agreement, but it seemed to veer off into your opinion of what needs to be done versus letting Cam evaluate it.

"Wiping the slate" is an old expression for getting a clean start. It doesn't mean we need to cut every player, it just means we should be willing to let any of them go in order to get a fresh start because frankly everyone of them are replaceable. It might take some time and some patience but that's just the way it goes sometimes.

This might be easier said then done while having to manage the salary cap. A clean slate might take several years to develop. But I agree it would be in our best interest as a team to find some young talent and mesh them with some still productive veterans, much the same way that New Orleans did this past season.

Addition by subtraction is dangerous right now - we haven't heard anything about player evaluations, we have no clue about the draft (other than speculation), we have no clue what the system is or how we're going to approach the team. Unless there are alternatives in place that have been thoroughly evaluated, it's not yet time to talk about who needs to stay and go.
