i forgot to post this but I read that carey wants a contract in the 20 mill range and half of it gauranteed. Colombo got 22 mill and 11.5 guaranteed so something in that range most likely. So assuming that, I am assuming miami isnt looking to spend 5-6 mill a year on him.

i saw that. i can't for the life of me understand why if we can we aren't locking up carey if what it takes is in the range of 4 years and $23 mil. with half guaranteed. we should be jumping all over that.

i almost think that's a typo on omars part.

I think Carey has been solid since he's been a Dolphin, but I think this FO wants their Olinemen to be dominant, I also think this is why you'll see Crowder walk. If anyone here thinks Miami isn't serious about winning a championship these two players being allowed to walk should help. We will be contending for a SB in the very near future. I think that was BP plane from the start, Maimi has been away from the big game for far too long.

if gross is about to sign for $9 mil per look for careys agent to up his demands big time.

i think carolina may have just outpriced any chance we had of carey returning by what they've offered gross.

Carey isn't even close to being in Gross' league

i know that. he's still a young versatile player who can play left tackle. right tackle, and offensive guard.

i know he won't get $9 mil per year but it just got definitely harder to bring back carey.

if he's lookin for 20 million, give him 24 mil for 5 years, and 10 mil gaurantee'd.. Less than 5 mil a year for a solid RT aint bad.. Carey isn't as good as Gross, but he's in the top 33% of RT's...
PLus if Jake got injured, Carey could play LT for us... If we lose him, we're gonna have to find a new RT, and with the possibilities of new starters at C and G, it would set us back to have a new RT aswell...
Just lock up Carey..
If we give 25$mil, 5 year deal... can we still obtain a Jason Brown if he hits the market? Or is that too much money invested in the Oline with Big Money Jake, The 5 million dollar men Smiley and Carey, and then the half mil Thomas and other backups make... It'll take like 5-6 mil to lock up Jason Brown too... Is that putting all your eggs in one basket...?
It's be a very expensive line with HIGH expectations, but after 1 year, it could be the best line in football, and it would have all 5 guys locked up for at least the next 4 years.. when smiley and Long's contracts are up.. If that line plays alone together that long, maybe we get a little dynasty brewin...

wow i'd love another Phin Dynasty... this decade is ours!

We had a rookie LT last year that outplayed Vernon and he was at RT. Even when Smiley went down Jake played well. So, don't overpay just because the FA tackles are thin pickens! Look at the draft and the money Vernon will want and use that towards another need.

If Carey wants that type of money, I'd be very tempted if I'm Bill Parcells & Jeff Ireland to do what the Jets did with Kris Jenkins and implement a weight clause in his contract, and if Carey breaks that limit, his pay gets docked. It seemed to resurrect Kris Jenkins play this past season for the Jets.

I think it's been pretty well document that Carey played LT in 2007 at the 325lbs leve, and this year was listed at 350lbs. Under Wannstedt and Saban, Carey was listed at 335lbs. as a RT. Clearly, the added weight, probably magnifying the huge gain in one offseason, hindered his play in 2008. If he'd kept his weight under control, I'd think his offere would've been a bit better initially.

i have to agree with you, he should play around 330, even that is huge.

Great Points about the weight clause.

I may be on the minority here but I say lock him up at 5-6million a year. With the increase in the salary cap and the insane inflation within the economy, free agent contracts are absolutely skyrocketing. Look at people who have signed contracts last year.. Roethlisberger, Turner, Faneca. All are great players but definately not the top position players (especially Turner when he signed) but have some of the top contracts in the NFL. 6 Million may end up being a deal for Carey especially with the tackle market in the NFL booming.

Carey played very well in 2007. Throw in a weight clause and lets keep some stability in our O-line.

For his size at RT, I'd tell him to keep between 320-335. He was excellent as a RT at 335 in 2005 and 2006, and had his best pro season at 325. He clearly regressed when he got back up to his college weight this year.

That's where things get tricky. If the NFLPA gets around to electing their next president any time soon; CBA negotiations can start.

Given the way the economy is going; I wouldn't be surprised to see a hard-line salary cap for a few season (keeping it the same for a few years) which might make accumulated contracts a lot trickier down the road, especially if you break the bank in terms of guaranteed money and roster bonuses (i.e. rewarding Carey for continuously keeping his weight in check if you implement a clause or some such) I don't think it would come to that; but it's a possibility.

I almost certainly foresee them slotting the salary by draft pick for rookies much like the NBA (which is one of the few things the NBA has done right). As much as I like Big Jake, there's no reason he should've been able to receive the highest salary for an offensive lineman prior to having set foot on an NFL field (In hindisight, I'll say he deserved it - he was tremendous as a rookie and will only get better, but you get my point).

Back to your post after a slight tangent there; I do agree - I'd be willing to lock up Vernon Carey at that price, even without a weight clause. It'd just be up to him to accept it, but in the end, his weight might actually help drive his price down a little - especially if potential suitors see him as a LT.

honestly if that what he wants we should give it to him i mean he would be a very good gaurd at worst and thats less then some of what they make so

f it let him walk, get someone else
