I keep reading about how we need to draft a CB in the first round, what about Tony Lippett, I thought he played well towards the end of the season? Was I crazy?? What's the consensus on his potential? Does he fit Vance Joseph's system? Any chance he steps into that boundary CB spot that's open?

There's definitely a chance, but its gonna be on the new coaches. They might see him as garbage. Lots of good players get held back early by coaching changes. Even if they see lippett as a #2 we still need a true #1 cb and I don't think Maxwell will be it.

He played better....but still very raw. He relies too much on his athleticism and technique is very suspect. Definitely a guy we can develop more as a #4 or 5 DB....if he is a top 3, we are in trouble! I saw him live in San Diego and he was out of position A LOT!

We still absolutely need a legitimate #1 guy. Lippett was a receiver until and still a late pick. Hard to rely on him for much. Our best hope that Joseph ends up being a db whisperer like we hope. Maybe we plan to run more press coverage with him and maxwell

He's a guy I'm excited for. Long way to go.

This. Potential is there, but you can't pass on a CB in the draft because you think you're going to start Lippett day 1.
Sounds like what they did with the offensive line last year (and hopefully dont do again :bobdole:).

If we could find ONE boundary corner, we should be OK.

Byron Maxwell actually improved as a boundary corner last year from 2014. Graded as a high end CB2 according to Ian Wharton.

I liked what I saw in that New England game. We will get a better idea how much the coaches trust him after this year's draft.

Hopefully between McCain and Lippett, we can have one develop into a decent starter for us this year - God knows we badly need it.

But we've been burned before waiting for guys to develop.. Re: Taylor and Davis :bobdole:

They need to put that guy WR corps, he was the Big10 offensive player of the year for Gods sake!

There are plenty of guys that were late round picks that developed into #1 CB's anything is possible.

I don't think anyone knows what to expect with him.

He's a project IMO, chosen by Tannebaum. Just have to wait it out.

CB is one of the positions where 'BPA' comes into play. I'd say there's now 4 positions we can address with that pick. However, RB might be where we can draft the biggest impact.
To use a baseball-related stat: WAR - Wins Over Replacement. I think we could draft a positive WAR guy at RB, where as I don't know if there's a positive WAR guy at any other position in 2016.
If you draft a guard, he'll be mediocre in 2016 because it's not a 'plug&play' position. It takes time to learn to play NFL offensive line. It's a big jump from college. Same with linebacker.
Running back is the fastest-impact position for a rookie. If we want a spark to our team we should take that kid from Georgia. Marshall is his name and he ran a 4.31 40 at the combine.

I believe u can get Marshall in the 5th round....he got injured early in his career and never made it out of coach's dog house to get playing time

I like Lippett, but it's a seriously high gamble to bank everything on him being able to make a major contribution this early, especially since he's still very new to the position. Drafting a CB high doesn't diminish his or McCain's chances at significant playing time in their second seasons, and one of them could still be groomed to replace Maxwell when his deal gets too expensive.
