There are reasons for hope below. The Dolphins are mostly (not counting veterans like Cam Wake and Mario Williams, the latter of whom should soon be gone) an inexperienced, ascending roster.

Here is The Daily Dolphin’s Top 10 Miami Dolphins under 25:

  1. Jarvis Landry, WR, 24 years old — Worthy of that contract extension.
  2. Jay Ajayi, RB, 23 years old — Led the NFL in broken tackles.
  3. Ja’Wuan James, OT, 24 years old — Very strong recovery from slow start.
  4. Laremy Tunsil, T/G, 22 years old — Very impressive debut season.
  5. DeVante Parker, WR, 23 years old — So, so much athleticism and potential.
  6. Kenny Stills, WR, 24 years old — Terrific deep threat; but the 3rd WR on list.
  7. Xavien Howard, CB, 23 years old — The Miami corner most likely to succeed.
  8. Jordan Phillips, DT, 24 years old — Inconsistent but skilled enough to move higher.
  9. Kenyan Drake, RB, 22 years old — Slight edge over Damien Williams due to KR’s.
  10. Tony Lippett, WR, 24 years old — The Miami corner with a crazy ceiling.
Also considered: Damien Williams, RB, 24; Bobby McCain, CB, 23; Matt Darr, P, 24.

Look how many of those players emerged, or started to emerge, this season.

Draft should be almost exclusively defense.

That's why Stills, at 24, (among other reasons) needs to be extended; can't go nuts, but something solid needs to happen.

Stills may not be on that list for long.

Despite the need, the focus wasn't on the defense in the last draft. The 2015 draft had Jordan Phillips, Bobby McCain, Cedric Thompson and Tony Lippett. It was really the 2013 draft that did this defense in...Dion Jordan, Jamar Taylor, Will Davis, Jelani Jenkins and Don Jones. A draft that should have been the backbone of the defense was a horrific fail.

Good point on 2013. That has to go down as the worst draft in Miami history. Just pathetically bad.

Absolutely have to find two defensive starters in this draft and maybe a defensive starter in free agency. I think that's realistic. More would be welcome, but would have to really hit in the mid to late rounds.

I agree that is realistic and it must happen. Anyone we get in free agency should be a starter from day one. I believe that will happen. As far as the draft we really need to hit on our first 2 picks.

Ozzy rules!!

It's hard not be optimistic when you have a good young coach with a very young team with potential.

I'm really excited to see what Lippett can do next year. If Miami keeps Maxwell, we have a pretty competent group of corners. I won't say great, because Maxwell is a known quantity and Howard/Lipett are still unproven. Potential is certainly there. It'd be nice to get an upgrade at nickel, though. McCain was inconsistent
