Well, for all the complaining on here about the horrible drafts, the Dolphins on this list come in 6th overall. And for the record, I hate Power Rankings, but at least this has some data to back it up somewhat.

6. Miami Dolphins (8.75)

Top 50 picks: 8
Pro Bowls: 2
Starting seasons: 35
Best pick: WR Jaylen Waddle (No. 6, 2021); Worst pick: CB Noah Igbinoghene (No. 30, 2020); Best value: RB De’Von Achane (No. 84, 2023)

The Dolphins had just 37 total picks from 2020-24, but 15 of them were top-100 selections. And though some of Miami’s best value picks (Jevon Holland, Robert Hunt) left via free agency, the franchise has done a nice job maximizing a somewhat short-handed pick arsenal.

Whenever I've pointed this out, someone will always come on and say, but Grier never keeps any of his guys and that's all his fault.

When I point out that he can't MAKE players sign, and that a lot of these guys want to bet on themselves... crickets ensue.

...and this is why I would avoid guys like Nolan in the draft; he's another one that just isn't likely to resign early.

2 pro bowlers in 5 years. And being a pro bowler isn't what it used to be. Our best pick being Waddle who is a good #2 receiver but has not made that leap to being a true #1 (though I agree Hill has hurt that development somewhat).

We have some NFL talent for sure, but boy do we have a hard time finding difference makers.

Yeah, my problem isn't with Grier's ability to make solid decisions in the top rounds.

I suppose you could disagree with passing up on Sewell and Chase for Waddle, but we did get a future 1st out of it. You could knock Tua as the pick but Herbert was a 2nd-tier QB prospect. You'd have been fired for drafting a tier-2 guy over a guy with tier-1 talent. Meanwhile, Love was a risky developmental guy and Hurts wasn't even a surefire NFL player. The team that drafted him took someone else (a bust WR) in R1, lol.

Okay, you could say everyone kind of knew Igbinoghene was a bad pick at the time...but you had Brian Flores to coach him so there was a reason why a freakish athlete from a big, SEC school wasn't exactly the worst pick there.

In the end, there have been far more pleasant surprises in the top-2 rounds for Miami. Few expected Waddle, Phillips or Holland to be quite as good as they were. Hunt was a huge hit that very few expected, too.

I think most peoples' issue with Grier is that he didn't pick the players they wanted. There were a lot of Kyle Pitts supporters. I probably would've gone Sewell personally. The Dolphins badly needed OL help and I recognized the QB needed protection and could kind of throw to anybody.

There were a lot of people hoping Noah Igbinoghene would be a RB. I was among that crowd but my pick at RB was basically a bust. Some lament the could've-beens like Wilkins > Dexter Lawrence or Waddle > Chase or WR > Sewell or Waddle > Parsons.

Okay, we haven't landed the stud / HoF player that you can build around...I get it, but that's all kind of hindsight. None of those were THE reason to get mad at Grier.

I go to the continued OL issues. It's getting rid of Tunsil (and James). It's passing over Sewell. It's letting Hunt get out the door. It's trusting Isaiah Wynn and Liam Eichenberg for WAY too long.

To me, that's someone Grier absolutely could've done better and it probably wasn't going to fall to anyone else to do it, either.

I wouldn't rate Miami that high. Waddle has been good but I wouldn't describe him as great. Especially when we could have just picked Jamar Chase.

Anyways, despite that we still can't win a playoff game like the other teams on that list. Is it grier or coaching? They both need to go either way.

Great points. I think Grier has drafted pretty well overall. The biggest issue has been keeping players. Hunt, Wilkins and Van Ginkel would probably be here if Grier didn't trade for Hill, Ramsey and Chubb. Then spend huge money to keep them.

I also think Grier needs to put more of an emphasis on character and leadership. Both Ramsey and Hill, two highly paid players, are me-first guys. That doesn't work.

Griers issue hasn’t really been drafting it’s been holding onto picks.

I’ve argued here he’s probably above average in first few rounds compared to others.

It’s been the trading side of things. Trade up for waddle, trade for tyreek, trade for Chubb, trade for Ramsey even though that was only a 3rd the contract stings more, trade up for Eich. Even the trading of our 3rd for last years 4th for wright and I love wright but we didn’t even use him last year so why they trade up for him?

Agree the issue with drafts is him consistently wiffing on Day 3 picks.

We got one guy, Andrew Van Ginkel in the last 6 years the developed into a key player. Wright and Washington will hopefully grow this season…but outside of AVG who’s our next best Day 3 pick since 2019? Blake Ferguson at LS?

I keep saying we’ve been one of the better teams regarding the draft since the rebuild. I’m glad there is an article to put this in perspective.
Yet, many will keep saying “Grier sucks” as if we’ve been a 3 win team the past 5 years. In reality, injuries have been our biggest problem not bad players.
