Postscripts from the Dolphins’ offseason program that ended this past week:

### Slicing the roster to 53 will be more difficult than any time in recent years. Why?

Start at defensive back.
The Dolphins began and ended last season with a combined 10 cornerbacks and safeties. Barring injuries, a strong case can be made to keep 12 this year, which would create painful roster choices elsewhere.
At cornerback, there’s Brent Grimes, Jamar Taylor (solid as the first-team cornerback opposite Grimes all offseason), projected nickel starter Brice McCain, Will Davis and rookie Bobby McCain.

Though Zack Bowman has done nothing notable this offseason, he has starting experience (five games for the Giants last season) and is very good on special teams. That’s six.

And we’re told barring something unexpected, the Dolphins intend to keep rookie Tony Lippett, the 6-3 converted receiver who had three picks in one practice and made a terrific play on a Ryan Tannehill bootleg last week.
Lippett has “made some plays on the ball that are pretty impressive,” backup quarterback Matt Moore said. “His athletic ability and length stand out. He's done well.”

So that’s seven corners --- two more than Miami normally keeps and not including long shot Sammy Seamster, who has impressed this summer.

At safety, Louis Delmas, Reshad Jones and Michael Thomas are automatic, and Walt Aikens’ development has been so impressive this off-season that one Dolphins official privately said he believes Aikens could be a starter eventually (not this season). So that’s four.

Rookie fifth-rounder Cedric Thompson, Jordan Kovacs or Don Jones could stick around as a fifth safety for special teams value, with Thompson having the edge if he excels in August.

We sure do have numbers in the secondary this year going into camp, not sure if we have the boundry corners all set but otherwise we at least have bodies there. There will be some hard cuts on that last cut if we stay relatively healthy, which means we are finally getting a little depth.

Like I said in another thread not sure Lynch has a spot for sure yet.

Lynch better start hanging onto the ball or he'll lose out to Semisch or Stoneburner.

I was thinking the same in my thread on competition at DB, which was before Barry but, not as well written. :)

I was thinking we will keep 10 but, there is a lot of special team's talent in this group. I was thinking that Lippett would be a practice squad guy but, no longer based on mini camp reports. Gomma be a great competition to watch

Tough roster decisions loom for Dolphins.....

Kudos to the front office for giving us these kinds of problems. Hope we have the same problem with the LB's........

Very encouraging news on the secondary in terms of depth. That was a big weakness last year and could potentially be a strength this year. Love what I'm hearing about Lippett. I think he'll see the field a lot this year.

Hate to say it but.....injuries will likely make the decisions easier by that time.

I think hull, vigil, and tripp make the roster. paysinger being the odd man out aikens plays safety and cb so bowman and seamster are likely out. who ever the best special teams player between kovacs, jones, and Thompson will stick. cant risk trying to get lippett to ps. someone will snag him up

No - I'm pretty sure Paysinger makes it with his special teams skills. He is competing hard with Chris McCain ato be a starter.
I doubt whether Hull and Vigil both make it. I see them as direct competitors and the best man wins the roster spot.

I think we are VG in slot cover and special team studs. The question is at boundary CB. I don't see us giving up on Davis, and Lippett may be a year away in spite of GLOWING reports. Both are keepers this year.

Some are thinking that Luc will make it. FWIW, did not know that he was the #1 HS prospect at LB coming out of HS.

I agree, but I think one of the vets gets the axe for one of the two. hull and vigil have been taking second team reps. I think cutting the udr lbs is going to be tough

Like to see that coaches love the way Hull pursues the ball. I think he's going to see the field and play well this season. He has great feet, and they show in coverage and his ability to navigate traffic on running plays. He's not big or explosive, but he's strong, smart, and quick. He's the best overall athlete and player of the UDFA LB's. Unless he suffers an injury or completely falls apart, I think he's a pretty safe bet to make the roster.
